Everyone in his office wears jeans most of the time. The only time things are different is when they have to meet a client or something, but IBWIP never does, that's just not part of his job. It's just okay there. I was kinda addressing the person who said in their opinion it's never okay to wear jeans to work. That just doesn't make sense to me. I'm not sure what wearing more expensive pants that need to be ironed has to do with taking your job seriously, but that's just me. I've worked in places with a dress code and places without and it always seemed like the same amount of work got done and people worthy of respect weren't always the snazziest dressers. I can understand that people still judge based on appearance and there are times when it is necessary to present yourself in the best light possible, but a day at the office sitting in the chilly server room making computers go doesn't seem like that kind of time.
That was me and it was a qualified statement about jeans in an office. I know farmers who dress better than people who like to 'maximize' casual dress codes. It has everything to do with discipline, and... I don't really know the word but people are more likely to listen vs. if you look like you just rolled out of bed.

IBWIP works in an office. People listen to him. He's good at his job. People respect him. He wears jeans every day. So does everyone else he works with.

I'm not talking about people you know, e.g. coworkers, they are a known quantity. You dress well for the people you don't know. People make value judgements in an instant. I wouldn't even say it's conscious but it's important. Is just like how if you put on a toolbelt and hard hat you can walk into just about any building and no one thinks twice. Is essentially a social uniform.

ETA: I don't like dress codes though. I also hate doctors who wear ties, is disgusting.
What's fubu?
Black people clothes.

Yay for waking up to a phone call from the environmental monitor!

No power in the server room (even though we have a generator) and just about everything is down.

That wouldn't happen if you lived in Canada. Your server room would be a cool 55 all the time.
