You might be on to something here. For me personally it never made sense to invest in gold, because that's the only thing my grandparents and parents would invest in outside of real estate. They have a ton of gold and gold-related securities, so from a family-portfolio perspective, we already have enough exposure to that, and half of it will be mine at some point anyway.

bree told me your dads teeth are all gold.

Not really. Students graduating private institutions are more likely to be successful later in life, go on to college, and graduate from there. Sounds like a good recipe to me.

Sure that works for those that can afford private school. Then take into account all the large additions of students to private schools, and the quality of education goes down on there as well due to the lack of focus from teacher to their students.

Teachers in private schools, and non tenured faculty, also usually aren't members of the public school teachers union. Obviously all public school teachers aren't mooches but it's pretty sweet to have a job regardless of your 'focus.' Private schools also tend to be more disciplined since performance is the direct measure of their ability to attract students to pay tuition.

Not everyone can afford private school. With public school they will just resort to crime or leave the country.

We are already paying for public school within our taxes. If we got that money back and spent it on private school would you then be okay with it?

I pay $4000 in property taxes. That is considered high around here. (espescially since my house is only 1600 sq. ft.) Private school costs more than that per year, and those taxes go to more than just the schools.

And those prices would certainly go down with more competition (and tax credits). We're not talking about abolishing public education overnight dude...

i don't have kids, yet still pay property taxes. got this theory part of those property taxes cover the other stuff as well as sending your kid to school... so you could easily offset the private costs at more than 4k per student. not to mention the private school prices will drop as the markets open up for taking kids from failing public schools.

If it's significantly higher than average get your shit reassessed by a third party, my county upped property assessments in a down real estate market (taxes here are % of current sale value) to make up their shortfall on state funds. Local tax assessors make bank because people don't review their taxes, especially when they are escrowed into a mortgage. NY has discounts for minors living in home, people over 60, veterans, people earning under a certain amount etc. Paying a lawyer now could save you sihtloads of money down the road.

Property taxes don't really have a bearing though because you are going to be paying them regardless. You might see a small discount if schools were privatized but I doubt it.

Like oil companies? You take the free competition out, then they can all charge what they want. They're the only thing left so the whole free market system won't work here

Again, what makes you think this would cause tuition prices to drop? Does university tuition drop with colleges? No, they all go up.

It's higher than average because of levys. The entire city pays this much. This is also the reason why:

We have the best school system in Central Ohio if not all Ohio.
We have the best city maintenance in the state (the blizzard that hit here, the streets were clear the next day)
Best facilities, and one of the better public libraries.

The list keeps going. That's why the taxes are high and that's why the price of real estate is high when compared to other suburbs of Columbus.

It's non intuitive but higher taxes don't necessarily correlate with better anything. I actually live in the 10th highest property tax as a % of home value in the entire country (NYC level tax on single family homes blows up the price). We don't have services at all, it's 50/50 the road even gets plowed in the winter. Could go on a rant on how civil service pays 2 to 3 times more than equivalent private sector jobs but eh >.>

I think university tuition is grossly inflated from the student loan process. Universities know that they can push a FAFSA application through for any price at 0 risk of not being paid. It's textbook self dealing/moral hazard. The government has never offered subsidized loans for prep school so the market is pretty 'pure.'
