Guy with guy reported at Virginia Tech. Could just be a false alarm.

10:32 a.m.

From NBC's Pete Williams:

At this point, federal officials are waiting to hear if they're needed at Virginia Tech.

They say there's no verification that there was actually a gun on campus.

One official says the three campers who reported seeing one thought it was a long-barreled gun with a short handle. But, as the University has said, the man who supposedly carried it has not been found.

Update from Virginia Tech, through VT News:

At 9:09 a.m. three juveniles attending a camp at the university reported seeing a white male, 6 feet tall, with light brown hair outside of New Residence Hall East holding what may have been a handgun.

They say the weapon was covered by a cloth or covering of some sort. He was walking fast in the direction of the volleyball courts. He was wearing a blue and white striped shirt (stripes were vertical), gray shorts and brown sandals. The subject had no facial hair or glasses.

Officers responded immediately to the area but found no one matching the description. Police have encountered no other witnesses reporting this individual or anything suspicious. Law enforcement officers from VTPD, Blacksburg PD, Christiansburg, PD, and Montgomery County Sheriff's Office are patrolling the campus, continuing to look for the subject.

If anyone sees anything suspicious contact the VT Police Department at 231-6411 or 911.

WSLS can confirm that the campus siren system has been activated.

Virginia Tech Alert claims person with a gun spotted near Dietrick Dining Hall.

Tech asking people on campus to stay inside, secure doors.

Police conducting search now.

WSLS's Ken Heineck is on the way to Virginia Tech now. More information as we get it.

Dietrick is a three-story, 93,000-square-foot dining hall, that also houses a convenience store, laundry area, central bake shop, and D2 (a smaller dining facility).
