Hawt Run for your life it's snow and ice and rain and my tires are bald!!!!!!

i agree with dbz in this thread.

if you dont wanna come to work, don't get paid or take a vacation day.

Well I don't think it's always a want. Depending on where you live they may not allow anyone on the road at all. I would love to see an employer fire someone when legally they aren't allowed out.

Our other location in Guatemala was experiencing five natural disasters at once last year. Sink holes, tropical storm, mud slides, earthquakes, and a volcanic eruption.

The majority of our employees made it to work. You Americans are so babied!

They legally wouldn't be open.

legally your boss wouldn't be at work to fire you then and legally you'd have some ground to stand on to contest it. doesn't mean they gotta pay you for the time you aren't working though. i'm guessing you're salaried like most of us here, but would you pay an hourly worker for time he spent at home because it was snowing outside and he didn't want to come to work?

you can either use PTO or not get paid. unrealistic to expect your employer to foot the bill for mother nature and your inability to get to work, especially when some of your work force still manages to make it in. my commute doubled today thanks to snow... not really concerned about it, fully expected it, made plans to deal with it. so did everyone else at my office.

plenty are planning on working from home tomorrow if it's still bad, if the type of job and company allows it, that's perfectly fine.

"The Department of Labor considers an absence due to adverse weather conditions, such as when transportation difficulties experienced during a snow emergency cause an employee to choose not to report for work for the day even though the employer is open for business, an absence for personal reasons. Such an absence does not constitute an absence due to sickness or disability. Thus, under the policy you described above, an employer that remains open for business during a weather
emergency may lawfully deduct one full-day’s absence from the salary of an exempt employee who does not report for work for the day due to the adverse weather conditions. Such a deduction will not violate the salary basis rule or otherwise affect the employee’s exempt status."

Where I work it depends on the conditions. They have different scenarios during a snow emergency.

1. Delayed start. Employees may arrive at work late so as to account for additional time needed to get to work.
2. Unscheduled leave. The employee has the ability to not go to work at his or her own discretion. The hours will be deducted from their recreational leave balance.
3. Essential staff only. The staff deemed essential for the day to day operations of essential services will be required to show up to work. All other staff do not need to show up, and hours are not deducted from their leave balance.
4. Closed. All staff do not need to show up, and hours are not deducted from their leave balance.

city is still fucked but I'm going in to work again. temp hasn't gone above freezing to melt the inch of ice coating the city. boss said he's going to hook me up for being the only one there again. hopefully today will be even shorter than yesterday.

So is it a risk or a reward to be able walk to work?

everyone crying about not being able to be there 'cause of the big 'ole bad weather can suck eggs! This is the way of the world. Make the effort, get the reward. Nice job!

Now you've got to get a pair of these,

no risk for me. it's icy as fuck out but no big deal for walking. I wouldn't drive right now unless I absolutely had to. the highways are all parking lots anyway so it's not like anyone can get here even if they wanted to.
