Ah. I don't even know the difference between the various clubs. Except that a putter looks nothing like a driver.

I've had everything from a 6.5 to a 10.5. My last driver was the Ping G10 10.5 degree, which my father nicknamed the Howitzer, because of how high I hit the ball. I think it was mostly a function of the shaft though. High launch shafts aren't any good for me.

I used to have a driver called the howitzer

the irons heads are all angled differently, 1 being the least, 9 being the highest. with less angle, you tend to hit the ball far. with more angle, you tend to hit it high but not as far.

there's also a sand wedge and a pitching wedge that hit the ball at a really steep angle but short to get over various obstacles and out of sand traps.

drivers have less of an angle and are for those long shots... and are also rated 1,2,3,4,5,etc. i think.

Golf sounds awfully complicated. I used to think it was just a bunch of poorly dressed old men spending time on a lawn away from their wives. Now there's geometry and shit.

once you've been playing for a while and can shoot consistently you know how far you can hit each club and then you know what to hit in any given instance

pretty much correct. only the 1 wood is called a driver though. the rest are just called woods.

also most iron sets start at 3 iron and go up. I have an odd 2 iron from an old set in my bag and no 1 iron. don't even know if I've ever seen a 1 iron. as the joke goes, why is it safe to play golf in a lightning storm with a 1 iron? because not even god can hit a 1 iron

Hardly anyone makes sets with 2 irons now. Most people opt for hybrids. Low lofted irons are difficult for people to get airborne. They say the average golfer consistently hits a 6 iron about as far as a 3 iron, but with much more control. Mostly because the 6 iron can be struck well, and the 3 iron not. I know a couple of good golfers who have no irons longer than 5. All hybrids and woods above that.

It's a function of club loft and length. When people were shooting cannons at each other, it was found that a shot at 45 degrees always carried the farthest, unaffected by wind of course. So if raw distance was our only concern, we'd use clubs of varying lengths that gave launch angles of roughly 45 degrees. Changing loft and length together allows for flexibility in the type of shot you want to hit.
