Yes, but the difference is that when wastefulness becomes a problem in the private sector, THE COMPANY GOES OUT OF BUSINESS.
or it gets a bailout because it was "too big to fail"

I wouldn't even really consider the USPS in competition, but that's splitting hairs. Either way, corporations run this country. That will NEVER change, not as long as this place still is a country...
If you have 3 companies that make up the industry working together in common interests, then you have a pseudo monopoly that fall outside the bounds of regulations.
The government need to do either of two things. Either compete against the private sector, or get out of bed with corporate America and close the loopholes they use to skirt around regulations..
public sector makes sure they spend their max budget every year so it isn't lowered the next year... its all totally backwards, no rewards at all for being better, cheaper, more efficient.
anti-trust laws are in place to prevent such a thing. gov't just needs to enforce them more/better instead of letting private america buy elected officials for their own financial gain.

and with that level of bureaucratic retardedness that pervades our government agencies, I am fully and completely confident in their ability to lower the cost of health insurance while increasing availability and maintaining quality

At least a fucking sales tax would make the illegals pay SOMETHING. I can't believe that you wouldn't agree with a flat income or sales tax. Really?
BECAUSE THE POOR WILL BE OVERBURDENED WHEN THEY CAN'T AFFORD A 9900" WIDESCREEN TV BECAUSE OF THE TAX
