Thread The Golf Thread.

I used to play a lot but now I don't really have anyone to play with. It was something I did with my family when I had one. I miss it and them, so I guess it is kinda hard. I need to get back to it sometime though. I used to be pretty good. I was the best girl on my golf team in college.
 
I shot 87 with five OB today. Kill me.

Hit up the Taylormade demo day before I played.

Did not like:
r9 driver: mostly because it looks really gimmicky and it has all these weights that you can move around. I hit it okay.
Burner 2.0 irons: they have no feel. I know it's a hard step going from forged to cast clubs in terms of feel, but these were awful. They were also incredibly, remarkably, stupidly light. The face is ginormous too -- like Big Bertha size. I ballooned the shit out of these.

Did like:
Burner Superfast TP driver: really long and straight. Need a set of ear plugs though. My left ear was ringing when I was done. I'm buying one of these when they aren't a million dollars.
Tour Preferred MB iron: low ball flight. Might have to do with the KBS shafts they use. Does punish you for a jerky swing.
r9 TP iron: Again with the KBS shaft. Pretty low ball flight. They were also heavy, which I love. I would buy these.

I didn't have time to play around with the rescue clubs or fairway woods.
 
I've got a set of custom-weighted Lady Cobras. I used to be captain of my golf team in high school. Sadly, now I play about half a dozen times a year :(

Every time I drive by a golf place I'm like - hey, sweet place for a house.....oh, it's a damn golf course, what a waste.

In Mehico, the place we stayed at used the recycled grey water for the lawns including golf, I thought that was fairly useful.
 
Mis-match of various woods, including a 'ginty', an old school persimmon 7-wood. Plus a set of taylormade burner irons.

ah, I've always called that type of utility club a baffler. cobra makes them in all sorts of varieties

Cobra is all about that retro crap. Honestly I'd rather have a smooth bottom club and just adjust my swing. How the shit can you hit a baffled club on the short grass?

I don't know how I feel about hybrids. I'm super reluctant to try them. They look goofy. A guy I play with now doesn't carry an iron stronger than a 6. he has a 2h, 3h, 5h. He says it helped him go from a 10HCP to a 6. I guess they are popular on tour too.
 
People look at me silly for carrying a 2 iron. In retrospect, I should be using a 5 wood only because over longer distances, higher trajectory is generally better.

I have a 2 iron in my bag. it's from an ancient wilson staff blade set. the only mismatch club in my bag. have a 5 wood also.
 
What's a good inexpensive club set or manufacturer to get for someone (me) who has never played a game in my life but may want to get started because a certain child loves it and wants me to?

just get some used on CL. ping, nike, titleist, taylor made, cleveland. just off the top of my head... you wont regret buying any of those and they'll hold resale decently if you're already buying used.

This used to be true, but their stuff has come a long way. The VR full cavity is an excellent GI club.

Basically all these brands have clubs that are so similar in performance, it's just a matter of taste. Beginners don't have taste, so get whatever brand -- shop by price. When you're fitting golf clubs for the first time, select something that gives you confidence when you look at the ball at address. Other than that, the shaft flex is probably the most important thing. If you have shafts that are too stiff or too whippy, you'll be miserable.

Try some stuff out.
