Last week, MS announced that the drive extender component of Vail, the new version of Windows Home Server, would not be included in the package. This announcement stunned just about everyone as drive extender was pretty much the top feature of the WHS OS.

Now, just a week later, HP says 'Ah, well, fuck it, we won't build shit for WHS 2' and has discontinued their entire Media Smart home server line, and shifted pretty much all involved over to developing WebOS devices instead. More misguided buy in to the 'cloud' contingent of people thinking the cloud is the answer instead of just a more expensive cool buzzword.

You have now seen the beginning of the end of WHS, unless Acer somehow decides to become a decent computing company.

I always saw WHS was just an application installed on a stripped to the kernel version of Server 2003 Small Business. I didn't think it warranted its own distro of sorts. Make an expensive app out of it like Office or SQL or something sure, but as a whole OS I didn't see the point.

And some of the decisions they made "for the sake of making it easier for the end user" were pretty crap anyway. It isn't as easy as MS says to get WHS up and running without having a lot of knowledge about Windows etc.

I did like the concept of an Add-in "store" in the new version, however.

I think there are plenty of reasons why its its own distro. price being one of them.
