man, how do small and medium businesses cope with stuff like that? Ouch.

They just have to. It's the way our country is, it's not like places are going out of business because people are sick, people are sick all the time, it's a normal thing for us to contend with and it's your right as an employee to have some paid time off if your health dictates you need it.

How is it a right to be paid for doing nothing?

Goes back to that whole entitlement thing you so love to deny. We have disability insurance for these things.

Well the way my doctor explained it to me is I've given my work 2.5 years of good work and now I'm too ill to do my work I'm entitled to some medical leave off so that I can return to work and be efficient once again when I'm better. You have insurance, we just have our work pay us, either way we get paid so why go on about where the money comes from? It's like I'm sure we in Europe are entitled to more maternity leave than you guys, it's a different society. Our society wants efficient, happy and secure employees and in America they just want most bang for their buck regardless.

That stuff hurts small businesses is the problem, whereas large corporations can soak it up and continue to do bussiness.

The major issue here though is it's a system set up to be abused.

It hurts small businesses if your businesses don't expect that sort of thing, whereas in England we have contingency for that sort of thing because it happens whether you like it or not. You could argue higher taxes we pay hurts small business, but it doesn't if that's what you expect to pay and make up for it in other ways.

Maybe, maybe not. No system is perfect and it's not a majority of people who 'abuse' said system, most people really aren't fit to work. Most instances are like broken legs, cancer, stress etc. You can't fake cancer.

I've worked for longer than that you slime, I'm talking cut off points for certain employee rights when you've been with the same employer for x number of years. If you've been there less than a year you don't get redundancy, some smaller places don't pay you sick etc.

Hope you feel better eileen. Please don't die on us, kthx? I wish I had more inspirational stories of pain & mental health issues & recovery from them, but I don't have any. :|

I was just reading in a book about how Europeans, the British specifically, were amazed and angered by the wealth created in the US from 1850-1900. None of it is amazing considering the overhead required to run a business there.
