Take a look at how many countries this is ALREADY illegal in.

This isn't an America does it first move.

What it IS is a Monsanto rules the universe move.

Doesn't matter what other countries it's illegal in. This country is suppose to be a beacon of freedom to the people.

And if you have seen my other post about this, then you will understand that I agree completely about Monsanto.

Here's one for WAW

You guys are blowing this way out of proportion. Monsanto does not want this bill to pass. It also won't have any effect on your home gardens or anything like that. Small businesses and individuals selling produce that make less than $500,000 from those proceeds are exempt from the bill.

This bill is a (kneejerk?) reaction to the salmonella contamination incidents that have occurred as of late. A strong argument can be made that even after passing, the mechanisms in this bill to regulate produce quality will be burdensome and ineffective.

Here's the bill.

what worries me is this:

If Sebelius believes the way you grow your backyard garden has a reasonable probability of causing serious adverse health consequences (read: in the long run we feel our way is better than your way) she can shut down your backyard garden.

No. I don't think she's showing up here with her list of 'how to's.' It's the fact that the proposed law allows her to is what is disturbing.

i.e. Instead of waiting until a Christian Scientist is denying a sick kid the benefit of doctors care, the gov't is shutting down the ability for a citizen to do it their own way until there's a problem.

What's next, mandatory vitamins?

It's just another potential intrusion that does not need to be there.

The problem further exacerbates itself when you get a billion dollar produce grower that wants to control the marketplace. "we can prove that the average backyard green bean grower product has more of a reasonable probability of causing serious adverse health consequences because our product has far superior control mechanisms in place."

I don't believe that's an accurate interpretation, regarding the backyard garden. Growing vegetables is not the same as manufacturing, processing, packing or holding food, nor is a garden a facility as defined there or elsewhere.

If you took the vegetables you grew into your garage, for example, wherein you unsafely packaged them for sale to your neighbors then maybe. But as it stands I don't think people with green thumbs have any cause for alarm.

Ok, can someone explain to me why this bill will banning the saving of seeds, when the bill itself doesn't even contain the word seed in it. Do Americans have another word for seed?

I just read the connection. It's already in my earlier post, and expanded further here:

REGULATIONS:
(3) include with respect to growing, harvesting, sorting,and storage operations, minimum standards related to fertizer use, nutrients, hygiene, packaging, temperature controls, animal encroachment… and water;

Storing Seeds.
