Thread The Good Ol' "Best Countries Too Live In" List.

Most of our poor are poor because they choose to be. Why should society be responsible for laziness?

I'm not against welfare, but I think some type of work should be required with it. Like picking up trash on highways for twenty hours a week.

No, not really.

150 years ago there were not government assistant programs and people got along fine. How are we supposed to get stronger if we baby people like this?

You have so much to learn...

And neither do you, so he could be right. From my experience, he is spot on.

Yet I'm not claiming to know.

And you have experience with all the poor people?

If someone is poor, it is because they lack the ability, the skills, or the willpower not to be. There are a small percentage who have just had the worlds worst luck, but that's it. Plenty of examples of people who have worked their way out from a poor, shitty background and have worked their way into a workable salary or better.

Welfare is abused in today's U.S. Too many people feeding off the system, reveling in it, even flaunting it. That's gotta go. Welfare should be a temp help in almost all cases. If after 2 years on welfare, your still suckin' on the gov't teat and haven't done much of shit to get off it, then sorry about your luck. Maybe a little motivation of not getting paid by those who are working might help.

So someone who lacks ability, skill or know how has choice? Please tell me how these choices can be made and please prove to me that it is just as easy for a poor person from an underpriviledged background as it is for a middle class person to make these choices and see them through. :)

All you guys talking about poor, I don't think you really know much about it quite frankly and I hate to be all cuddly wuddly with ODS but I have a feeling me and him know a bit more about living on a shoestring than most of you.

My freshman year in college I was surrounded by poor, underprivileged people on grants. by my second year, ninety eight percent of them were gone....

We provide the under privileged with plenty of opportunities here, if they don't take advantage of our, what can we do? Write them checks every month because they weren't born into middle class?

Bullshit.

How on earth do any of us know exactly why all the poor people are poor? We don't. We are just guessing.

And how many people abuse the welfare system? Is it 60%? Is it 5%? Again, it's all just guesses.

I agree that there is need for welfare reform. There does need to be a way for people to collect money only while proving they are interested in getting back into the work force.

ANYONE can be a doctor, lawyer, air traffic controller, etc and make a really good living. Myself, and plenty of others, CHOOSE not to.

Anyone can, but not everyone has the same intelligence, upbringing, community, and role models. All which play a big factor in how people make life decisions.
