Unemployment != welfare Welfare is strictly through our tax dollars. Unemployment gets subsidized through the company that did the releasing of employment

Unemployment entitlements are only available for a set amount of time. After that you're going to need other assistance.

So the local mill closes in Steeltown. No problem. Everyone just takes one of the many other jobs in town.

too fucking bad. maybe it's a stupid idea to move to a town where the entire infrastructure is dependent on a single company

oh no, not maybe. it IS fucking stupid. move somewhere else, learn how to do something else

So no-one should have taken any of the jobs available at the new mill in case one day it closed down? Maybe businesses should only open where there are already business and drive labour costs up through competition. Well thought out plan. Maybe everyone should live in one place so all the people and all the jobs would be available to everyone. I get it now.

Were there another 800 jobs available there? If so, maybe not a problem for everyone else who was let go.

My point is that the economy can dictate that there are levels of unemployment that are, at that time, unavoidable. Who falls into those unemployment figures can be decided by factors such as geography, skillsets and even chance. To assert that anyone who is unemployed is automatically lazy is arrogant. In a capitalist society, there needs to be a level of unamployment for the system to work. Accepting this means that there is a responsibility for society to care for those who are victims of this fact, together with the feckless who can't easily be weeded out.

I'm not saying to get rid of unemployment. I don't expect everyone to be able to find a job the same day. However, I'm willing to bet that over 50% of the time, the reason a person has not found a job is because:

1.) They aren't looking
2.) They're not willing to do any job
3.) They're not willing to take a pay cut to stay in the same job field
4.) They don't care.

Should there be unemployment of some sort? Yes. Do they really need more than 6 months of it? No they shouldn't.

I'd agree with you. There are others who seem to think that people should starve if they can't find work as they should be lumped together with those who don't want to work as being worthless.

or maybe they should have used the opportunity to create other jobs in the town so that it wasn't relying on one industry

or maybe not set up an entire fucking town

or maybe stop bitching and take responsibility for their own choices. why in the fuck should I have to pay for the fact that they took a risk on that place?

you don't seem to get shit. /shaq attack

So the town sits there with hundreds of vacancies waiting for the day people become available if the mill closes. Tard much?

Here's the job listings for the two cities hit the hardest with unemployment:

Detroit, MI

http://jobsearch.monster.com/PowerS...=Detroit, MI&rad=20&rad_units=miles&tm=60&dv=

There's over 1000 corporate jobs currently available

Cleveland, OH
http://jobsearch.monster.com/PowerS...leveland, OH&rad=20&rad_units=miles&tm=60&dv=

There's over 1000 corporate jobs currently available

This isn't even including walk in jobs such as retail and food services

So yes......they do sit there.

That's my point dumbass. (Semperfly) Where do these magical vacancies appear from? Let's take it in baby steps.

I want to set up a steel mill. It will be cheaper for me to do that where there is a level of unemployment so I set up in a small town with not much going on. People move there (as you suggest they do having lost their jobs somewhere else) to fill the vacancies. Over time, subsidiary businesses set up to supply the mill and the workers. Repeat this scenario all over America. That's how the West was won my friend. Then along comes a worldwide economic recession and everyone stops buying steel. It's not just the steelworkers who lose their jobs, it's also the guy who used to service all the workers lawn mowers as none of them can afford him any more. Screw them. It's their own stupid fault.
