In an effort to pick up a new physically taxing hobby I've set my sights on mountain biking around the desert out here. I'm looking for an entry level (~$500) bike and was hoping you had some suggestions. I've poked around bike boards and done some searching and the Specialized Hardrock keeps getting mentioned as being pretty, anyone have any experience with it or something like it?

it's a good entry bike. i know a couple riders who ride specialized only. also good are trek, gary fisher, cannondale. just go with whatever your local bike shop sells. also, be sure to get them to measure you up for it and to adjust the bike to fit you once it arrives. it makes a surprisingly big difference in comfort and performance.

I mountain biked a good bit years ago. can't go wrong with specialized. I used to ride giant. think they're both made in the same factory or at least they were

I used to own a GT and I loved it so much I don't think I would ever buy another brand. Maybe Mongoose.

It was Pacific Cycle, and they added shittier low cost bikes to their lineup. They still make good ones.

You can find a Gary Fisher Wahoo in that price range. Great bikes. I got mine for $600 brand new a few years back. '07 I think.

Go to a bike shop and find one you like, then like Chris said check out Craigslist. I couldn't find mine in good enough condition on CL so I bought it new. Cycling is an immensely popular pasttime, so it shouldn't be too hard though.

I ride a GT i-drive full Rockshox with XT/XTR and hydraulic discs. A work of art as well as functional.

Looks like a nice bike, but they don't seem to be in my price range, unless one came up used. Guess I could trawl the bike forums.

Hadn't heard of this one, but the reviews look really good for it. I'll have to look more closely at it.

Definitely look into it. Gary Fisher makes kick ass bikes and the Wahoo is a great beginner bike for the money. Maybe upgrade the saddle though. The 07 wahoo seat was a bit stiff. Sore crotch is not fun. Any local bike shop should carry a slew of different ones.

I want to get into biking. We have tons of trails around here.

I just remember having so much fun as a kid riding out on a trail until I'm tired then hating the ride back since I exhausted myself. lol

Don't try to take the wind out of my sails and make this thread all about you, bitch.
