(CNN) -- Legalizing marijuana is a civil rights issue, according to one of California's most prominent African-American advocacy groups.

The California State Conference of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, led by President Alice Huffman, recently announced its "unconditional endorsement" for Proposition 19, a legislative initiative on the November ballot that would legalize the recreational use of marijuana in California.

Huffman said African-Americans are disproportionately affected by the criminalization of marijuana which makes passing the law a civil rights issue.

...

Really?

whatever guise is necessary to get it legalized I'm all for. we let rapists out of jail with a slap on the wrist and keep weed smokers locked up for disproportionately long terms which costs us all A LOT of money. iirc, something like 90% of the US prison population are in for drugs

Funny, I see all of this as basically the same whiny shit that's being spouted in the article.

I have nothing against weed, and I couldn't care less if it gets legalized or not, but don't pretend to give a shit about prison and court costs. People want weed legalized so they can smoke it more easily, pure and simple.

it's a serious problem if we have jail overcrowding across the whole country and we let violent offenders go to keep weed smokers in jail. that's not just wrong, it's disturbingly sick. there is no winning the war against drugs. portugal legalized everything about 10 years ago and their casual use actually went down something like 25%

Blah blah blah.

Violent offenders will still be let out with slaps on the wrist regardless of the drug situation. The two are totally different problems that have to be addressed separately. They are grouped together only when someone wants to sensationalize the "LEGALIZE WEED NOW!" issue and doesn't have any other good reasoning for it.

it's legal in holland and look what it did for them - they're in the world cup final.
