I set up a new Ubuntu 9.1 box over the weekend, and so far I'm loving it. I'm mostly using it for Dynamips and GNC3 (tools for virtual Cisco IOS boxes), but the more I use it, the more I could see me migrating more and more over to it. It's been a while since I played with Linux, and I have to say, it's come a long way.

so, who else is using it out there. What flavor/version. What apps have you installed that seem to be worth it. Which ones to avoid?

These answers and more will be answered ITT

The Ubuntu installs are great, most things work smoothly right out of the gate.

However, it was easier to get Gentoo installed and running than trying to merely get the updated Nvidia drivers working under Ubuntu for me.

:wtf: It even prompts you to enable the nvidia drivers.

That said, I find linux on the desktop to be useless. The netbook remix is great, for netbooks tho...

From what I remember of the version I installed, think it was 8, it didn't have the "real" Nvidia drivers because the Ubuntu president had 'issues' with Nvidias commitment to open source.

Ahhh, yeah they just give you a warning that the drivers are proprietary and can't be updated by the community, along with a button to download and install them. Same thing for java.

edit: And maybe flash, i dont remember

i've been contemplating installing it on my general purpose machine since i don't really use it for gaming. i've been using ubuntu virtually for linux c programming and enjoy. i assume apple doesn't release itunes for it though?

I tried ubuntu , and enjoyed it for a while, until I tweaked something wrong and it dumped me to a command line with some cryptic error message that I had no idea what it could mean.
So I formatted and reinstalled windows:p

The apps I tend to use most are written for Windows so even though I've tried linux several times I tend to go back to windows. Linux is great on servers.

Once a year or so I get the itch to install Linux for whatever reason. I get it installed, use it for a week, then go back to Windows.

Well, I mostly wanted the Linux box for my CCNA exams. Dynamips is awesome if you dont' want to pony up for a cisco router in your home.

It doesn't take anything away from what I do, since I still have the Win 7 box, the 2 2k3 servers, and an XP laptop, so Ubuntu was a perfect choice for the spare desktop I had.

Didn't have any issues with the video driver, although it's not an Nvidia chipset grfx card.

Not related to the questions at hand but if anyone has any idea how I can sort out my soundcard on my ubuntu partition that would be great. I'm a linux noob and have no idea how to reinstall the fucker.

Right click on the audio control button on the panels and select preferences. It will allow you to select an audio driver for you card.
