The implications of this could be staggering.

Apple filed a suit against HTC, saying that their Android equipped phones violate about 20 of their patents.

Basically, Apple is trying to enforce their position as the only touchphones for sale in the US.

wtf

March 3 (Bloomberg) -- When Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone in 2007, he said Apple Inc. had applied for more than 200 patents for the device and was ready to enforce them. Now, Apple is putting those words into action.

Apple filed a patent-infringement complaint against Taiwan’s HTC Corp. yesterday, seeking to prevent U.S. imports of phones that run Google Inc.’s Android operating system. The decision to take the case to the International Trade Commission signals that Apple wants to curb HTC’s market share gains as quickly as possible, said Lyle Vander Schaaf, a patent lawyer with Bryan Cave LLP in Washington.

“It’s like nuclear war,” said Schaaf, who specializes in cases before the ITC in Washington, where Apple filed complaints over 10 patents. “If you really want to have an effective remedy to protect your rights, you go to the ITC. Once you’re there, there’s no going back.”

Is this an afront to HTC? to Android? I am thinking it's to Android because HTC is the premier Win Mobile provider and their Sense UI has been used on WinMo phones for ages before. It was when HTC did it with Android that Apple's panties were in a bunch. It just so happens HTC is one of the leading providers of Android phones as well. I am interested to see if (read: when) Apple issues a suit against Motorola.

This might explain why Google waited to enable multitouch on their OS for US phones but have had multitouch enabled since the beginning for other countries.

HTC will weather the storm because they are prepping themselves for WiMo 7 anyway. Certainly interesting to see it played out, though.

hahahaha

And they cried over Microsoft monopolizing the Operating System industry..

MS use the same "excuse" that has protected Apple; they correctly claim they provide a "system" from ground up. This is legal because you can limit and isolate whatever you want when you do all development from hardware to software of a product. MS only put an OS on any hardware you wanted to load it on, so monopolizing functionality or performing anti-competitive measures to the competition was not appropriate before and this is what got them in trouble.

Speaking of nuclear, there was an interesting article in this month's National Geographic about Toshiba going exactly that. They are building mini nuclear power plants that somewhat resemble slim, underground water towers and provide 10 megawatts for 30 years. (Enough energy for 8,000-10,000 homes.) The pumps are electromagnetic, with no moving parts, reducing the chance of disastrous failure. The remote village of Galena in Alaska is in negotiations to become their first customer.

Palin probably put that into motion, or at least will take credit for it if it works.

Disposable nuke plants? I'm all for them keeping that shit up in Alaska.

They may not file against Motorola, the two have shared circle-jerks in the past.
