that's a lot of woulda-shoulda-coulda over nothing when we are already know how badly bush fucked up which would have been extremely difficult to trump

1) brought on the worst debt the country has ever had

I'll give you this one, even though there are a large number of factors which externally contributed to it, things that Bush could not have avoided and isn't/wasn't responsible for.

2) entered into an unnecessary war costing the lives of hundreds of 1000's of iraqis

A war which elected officials voted in favor for and authorized. Elected officials who voted on behalf of the people they represent, in a way making you, me, and everyone else responsible as well.

3) made the world on the whole hate us even more

Uh, so? If they hate us so much we should call in all foreign debt and eliminate foreign aid. Hey guess what? I've just solved the deficit problem!

4) worst approval rating of any president ever

A bad approval rate when the mass media is pouring Bush haterade into the water supply wherever possible? Noooooo, I don't believe it.

need I go on? these were all things firmly in his control and any normal person would have gotten at least a few of those calls right

Now explain how Gore or Kerry could have possible done better, in your opinion.

Yes, they voted for it. But now we all know Bush lied about why we should be there.

They have brains and can form independent thoughts.

How so?

They have brains and can form independent thoughts.

Independent thoughts like "I know, I'll buy into a major Carbon Credits distributor and then I'll pretend to go super green and use my political influence to make an environmental teary-eyed video with polar bears so I can push Carbon Credits down everyone's throats! I'LL MAKE BILLIONS!"

Those kind of independent thoughts?

How so? Iraq is an imminent threat to us. They have WMD's. They hurt my daddy. Oh, wait. Hold up on that last one.

Yes, forming an independent thought. Being able to look at the information at hand, processing it in an intelligent way, and being able to act on it in an intelligent fashion. Bush isn't capable of that.

You're right about everything but the daddy argument - I'm no fan of Bush Sr. but he took the sensible option to call a ceasefire once Iraq was pushed out of Kuwait and did not persue them over the border, despite hawkish advice to push to Baghdad.

I remember an interview with a military attache on BBC Panorama back in 1996 who was involved in the Gulf War - He suggested that if the US had pushed to Baghdad after Kuwait was secured, they'd still be embedded there. I can't find the clip online, but the clip is shown as part of BBC's The Power of Nightmares - Episode 2 I believe.

I am not a Bush apologist. However I will defend what I think that he has done right.

Defending political opportunists and careerists has never been my thing. I can be somewhat certain Bush's brand of compassionate conservatism fell flat on its face after Sept 11th, after that he just winged it like the worst kind of populist. I can think of very very little which he deserves any real commendation for.

actually, probably the best thing for republicans to say whenever someone brings up Bush during this race is "this isn't about Bush, this is about the next president". If anyone tries to defend Bush things get derailed quickly.

Remember, ~30% approval rating means ~70% of people will disagree with you.

does this thread seriously have bush apologists?

you can't be fucking serious...

All I'm saying is that he did the best he could with the situation he had, and none of the other possible candidates could have done any better.

both Kerry & Gore are vastly more intelligent which would have resulted in fewer blunders of gargantuan proportion that Bush ensnared himself in on a seemingly daily basis
