So last night my husband and I drove down to Ikea about an hour away to buy a desk. On the way in saw if that you spent over $399 on the ikea card you got 12 months same as cash. So we pick out our stuff, got a couple other things and spent just over $500. We get to the register right at closing time and I said I wanted to get an Ikea card. Well the lady at the register said oh you had to apply for that when you come in and I was said well no one tells you that. And she was just kind of ignored it and repeated the total. So we throw it on a credit card.
Well money is tight with medical bills right now and what not so I decide I'd rather put it on the ikea card. So we call and check with customer service and they said we would have to physically return it to the store and repurchase the item on the Ikea card. So tongight we reload the stuff in the car and drive back down. Go in, apply for the card and get approved. We go to customer service and I wanted to make sure we had to carry everything back in. I go about telling the lady the issue and she's like I don't know if we can do that. I say I called Ikea's customer service line and they said it isn't a problem. So she calls someone and tells them about half of what I said and then says we can't transfer the purchase onto a different card. I said I am not transfering, I want to repurchase the items. Well she said the way we have to do it is return what we bought, then go and get the items off the shelf and go through check out. I tell her that we purchased the last one of one of the main pieces, so can we just buy back what we purchased. She says no, it has to be checked back in, then go back into the back and it will be returned to stock tomorrow. I tell her its an hour drive, and further more the customer service people said we could do it and she just says well I don't know what to tell you.
In conclusion I am pissed off and Ikea will be hearing from me until something is resolved. I was so mad, I walked right out... and had to wait for my husband who stopped for an ice cream cone.

First of all, same as cash my ass it still hits your credit.

Second of all, how dare you use us like this? Like you don't play with us. I mean i am only slightly aware of you.

Thirdly, go search on Consumerist.com for Ikea management numbers. You may be able to get something for this experience. If you don't find anything you can write to the website, it always seems that companies keep an eye on this website and may be able to help you out.

First, we have decent credit, we always pay them off before the time frame.

Secondly, I have 2 small children and work, don't have much time to be on the computer anymore.

Third, I just finished emailng the company and will be calling tomorrow after work. My mom also works for GE who deals with Ikea's credit cards so she is going to talk to someone tomorrow.

Yeah but the amount of hits to your credit . . . nevermind.

Make sure you keep a log of when you contact them. It seems that they only record calls when its convenient for them.

Long time no see stranger. How are the little ones?

I know, I've been bad about stopping in, its been awhile, the kids and work keep me super busy.
The little ones are good, my older son Cole is 3. He had surgery back in Februaury to help treat Failure to Thrive and is doing great! The younger one Brett is turning 1 next month, I am up to my eyes in birthday plans!

How are you?;)

I know this is foolish, but what ever happened to waiting till you had cash in hand to buy stuff? I mean, with an interest bearing checking account, you can actually end up ... nevermind. I know this won't catch fire here.

To quote the great Joe Walsh: "Life has been good to me so far."

It's called we had a second baby and now need to turn our office/spare bedroom into a room for him since he's almost a year old. The desk we had was too big to go anywhere else in the house so we sold it and are waiting for our entertainment center to sell via craigslist because we have to move the computer to the living room. We technically have the cash, but I would rather not make cash flow tight. We have medical bills we are paying on right now because I had a csection and our insurance is 80-20 and leaves sizeable bills as well as extra things the insurance didn't cover since the baby had a few problems when he was born. We also had some unexpected new expenses because our free babysitting father-in-law decided to go back to work and now we have 2 children in daycare... any other questions?

Not many people understand this concept. This is America (fuck yeah) after all.

keep in mind that the people who are bitching at you also aren't parents. i understand, and you didn't come here to be bitched at because of your personal financial choices.
bottom line is that you had a bad experience with a lot of inexperienced people and a lot of wasted time. you are smart to write the company...i write companies all the time (and i try to balance the bad with good), and i often hear back, which makes me happy. maybe this time, if you do have the cash, go ahead and pay as much as you can so you don't pay interest on it (or pay enough off where you can pay the rest off next month.)
keep us posted on what happens, and please stop in every so often so we don't feel alone and abused. :( :fly:

Thats what we do. Most of what we buy is with cash.
I like it when the banks pay me interest for a change.

What do you expect. It's the land where you can furnish a 200 sq ft apartment for $15. I would just take the stuff back and tell them to get bent and go somewhere else.
