I was just having a conversation with someone I traditionally classify as an alpha male. Military-based, womanizer, physically well-built, heavy drinker/socializer.

We were having a chat about his latest conquests and mentioned she was a sex toy salesperson (or something like that). I jokingly suggested she try a strap on on him. I think that's only fair because if he expects to penetrate her rectum, she should be able to return the favor. This, however, sparked the phrase "I am a man, I will not bend over, I won't be taken".

That got me thinking (and very mad as a consequence), am I any less of a man because I bottom/take it? Needless to say I couldn't humor his stories of "conquering" another woman (which I normally find riveting) anymore so I just politely bagged out of the conversation.

What characteristics do you define "masculine" as having?

what i want to know is how do YOU characterize a man? you're male, but are you "manly?" you're gay. you're brain is different than a straight man's. that automatically means you and straight men are different.
are you talking description? because it will vary. your fiance will find you more manly than drool does. april finds you more manly than she does fly. it will vary, depending. do you feel manly? do you act manly? do you do manly?

Heres one thing that may be shocking and keeps me disappointed in myself. I am disgusted if a man cries. I get over it quickly but I don't react well to that.

Well apparently bending over isn't manly so I guess I don't DO manly.

Are there standard rules that generally everyone follows? Or is it just another thing like you "enjoy" older men but some others think your obsession is creepy?

Well, I don't take it up the butt, and I don't think that makes me a man. Dan doesn't take it up the butt either, but I don't think that defines him as a man. That just makes us both uninterested in pain and discomfort. Also, I don't think it's sexy, but that's just me. Perhaps this guy believes that men should be dominant. He sounds like he hasn't stopped to think very much about all of the possibilities life has to offer and that everyone gets to choose for themselves. Defining masculinity is difficult because everyone gets to do it for themselves. I want a man who is strong and protecting. Someone who makes me feel safe. I also need somebody who can reach the top shelf. I like a man who is as smart as I am or smarter. It's just really difficult to say this is the only way to be masculine though. I guess masculinity is really defined by having a penis and balls? I dunno.

Other than that, my love of fast cars, faster women, and freely flowing booze.

Actually, in all seriousness, I think masculinity is best described by how many kids you can spawn and get away without paying child support.

No, no, wait, really now. Masculinity is best shows by how far of a flame shoots out your ass when you light a fart on fire.

No no no, okay, ha ha, in all seriousness, Masculinity is best defined by

Masculinity is in the carriage, it's a presence, a demand and command of power. This ties in with strength, confidence and a take charge air. I am very masculine. :p

i don't know, a guy that cuts down trees and smokes marlboro...

Lumberjack ARE pretty manly

I'm a lumberjack and I'm OK
I sleep all night and I work all day.

I cut down trees, I eat my lunch
I go to the lavatory.
On Wednesdays I go shopping and have buttered scones for tea

I cut down trees, I skip and jump
I like to press wild flowers.
I put on women's clothing and hang around in bars.

I cut down trees, I wear high heels
Suspendies and a bra.
I wish I'd been a girlie, just like my dear pappa.

Don't let another persons insecurities shape you. The dude had an opinion on the matter... close-minded or not he is still a man just like you.
