War is ugly. It's supposed to be. It should be ugly and horrifying and disgusting and wretched and draw up every terrible and unpleasant emotion the human mind can experience. It should be awful otherwise we'd get too fond of it.
But Bashir, like virtually everyone in Starfleet and the majority of the Federation, was an idealistic fool.
Which is why it made for a good character development episode.
