Advice The Home Improvement/Automation Thread

i have a bunch of 100 foot 12ga cords, and i cant run my heavy shit off them. Anything that pulls more than 12A is no go.

i think its the stranded, and the insulation doesnt help, because I can obviously pull 20A through 12/2 UF no problem.

I can actually pull 40A if i want to..... MWBC, but i try not to.
There's no difference in resistance between solid/stranded of a given AWG.

My dad lost a finger probably 10 years ago when he was holding a cord out of the way of a circular saw, and the saw hauled the cord (and his finger) into it. And I've personally managed to cut the cord off a circular saw two or three times now. I can fully understand wanting a cordless one.

I don't use a circular saw enough to justify buying a non-corded one.
I cut the cord on my circular saw twice
after the 2nd time I retired it and got a cordless, but I use it pretty regularly

im generally cutting things in "the field" so its super useful to not have a cord. And the only things i cut with a circular saw are sheet goods.

Ill be honest, right now its just got extension cord ends on it :p... as it has for the past 5 years.

My intent was to do a 2x20a mwbc, but as you noted, 240, 20 to a subpanel is also viable. Although I have to check code for sub-panels off subpanels.
I dont know Montgomery county. It would be fine in howard you need separate neutral and ground. Also like if you dont get a permit no one inspects it so...

I rarely do permits, but I do everything to code 100% so I dont get uber-fucked if an inspector does see it eventually.

AWG compensates for that, gee is right.
I dont know the AWG system well honestly. Anything under 10 usually comes as stranded. I order parts which is what makes being an electrician boring. You just get parts and hook things up.... Like I have so much background in all the other shit and I feel like I'm just connecting things all day.

yeah..... that doesnt work when the date codes on the romex is after i bought the house.
Well I was gonna make a point about them only doing that on commercial work but they are assholes. Did I burn down the fucking house, no? let's call it a win. There IS an inspector in fucking howard who fucking told my boss that I smelled like beer. Like 8 hours of dashboard camera and the house security system and WHOA I WASNT DRINKING. I am still so fucking mad about that. The inspection was fine everything was fine. He just HAD to say that.

Um boy, less talk about current dissapation through the skin effect over long runs.
The skin depth of copper at 60Hz is ~8mm. It makes no difference to a household extension cord, unless it's 0000 gauge.

And stranded vs solid makes no difference, unless you're talking about Litz wire with individually insulated strands. Big wire is stranded so you can bend it without breaking it, not for any electromagnetic reason.

And why the fuck are you calling me 'boy' ?

Cause it was silly.

You made a very general statement so of course I took it to the limit because this is UF. I got questioned on 1000' extension cords ffs. Apparently we have to appease a higher power that isn't fly since he cant make a server work. God forbid the last stand on earth doesnt have accurate calculations for power drop in stranded cables.

DO YOU LOVE ME NOW DAD

So here it is, 13 weeks after the roofers said it would take "up to 12 weeks" to get my roofing material, and I'm still without ETA.

I'm beginning to think I've been taken for slightly more than a whole desk. :/
