Pics Hobby Thread

I've started a new hobby and thought you should know about it. Coffee roasting!

We've got a great local place to get green beans (which is what they are called before roasting). I just chose their base beans which was $30 for 5 pounds. Green coffee is CHEAP! Then I went and picked up a cheap coffee roaster off Ebay. This thing:

So far, I've found about 350g seems to be the sweet spot for roasting with this thing. The roasting is clear from perfect, but you'd expect that for $60. Coffee roasting is a rabbit hole and some of the elite home roasters will run you >$1000. I figured I'd try it out and if I liked it, I could dive down deeper into it.

Anyway, after about 20-30 minutes, and then a 24 hour rest on a sheet pan, @APRIL and I have some of the freshest coffee possible! I'm still a troglodyte and don't really 'get' all the weird flavors that aficionado attribute to coffee like bubble gum, stone fruit, etc. But it tastes good, and that's good enough for me!

Now post pics of your hobbies.
Have you tried any other methods of roasting. Do you have to use this roaster outside? I hear it can be quite smoky. I was actually looking into this a couple months ago because I found a supplier for my favorite coffee bean, but they don't roast them so I now have a bunch of unroasted coffee beans and need to figure it out. I miss my coffee.

Pottery is super fragile at that state. Now I know to be more careful. Threw the bowl in the bucket of clay scraps and it will become something new.

I'm working on something new.
Perry miniatures sets. Anglo-Zulu wars.
Think Battle of Rorke's Drift.
If you know what that is.
No pictures yet. Gonna be a while.
Something on this scale is a time consuming commitment.

We won trivia night one evening when I knew the answer to the question was the PBS miniseries Shaka Zulu.

Me, the community college graduate, at trivia night with a bunch of PHD candidates.

I use it inside. It's not very smoky. However, I don't like my beans Starbucks-ass black.

Who does? Starbucks coffee is gross, over-exposed to oxygen, and over-roasted. I just know it can be smoky prior to getting to that point. I'm not looking to buy a roaster yet, and read you could just do it in a pan, but I guess I should reconsider if I want to do it inside.

Yeah, you can do it in a pan, or an oven. But this thing was like $60 and is much easier since it moves everything around instead of you having to do it. I like the smell of roasting coffee, so zero issues inside.
