I regret to inform you, if you didn't know, that this is the nymph of the super invasive/destructive spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) & the recommendation is to destroy on sight & look for egg masses. I don't think they're asking folks in your area to report sightings to the state dept of agriculture anymore but you can check

this monster is THREE today, which is also the number of times I've cried about that fact so far today
the nymphs are so cute and bright and exotic looking so it tends to catch peoples' eyes and a lot of times non-bug friends send pics of them to me because they're like "hey august likes bugs, I bet she'll be so excited to see this weirdo!" and I always feel like a big meanie being like YEAH THATS A CERTIFIED BABY ASSHOLE, YOU GOTTA KILL IT but they're just SO incredibly destructive.
Japanese Beetles/Popillia japonica is another that is super eye catching and are actually pretty adorable! but they are also invasive assholes and pretty much all they do is have a giant beetle orgy and then skeletonize your plants.

You sound like Dad if he talked about bugs instead of invasive plants.
Brazilian Pepper, Chinese Tallow, Peruvian Water Primrose, Chinese Privet, etc.
He keeps poison in his truck and will kill them if he comes across them while driving around.
it's hard because it doesn't feel good to kill anything and because it's not their FAULT, there's no malice or plotting or intention on their part, they're just living their life the way they do, but if you don't at least try to keep them from spreading, you're instead dooming others.
it's basically a trolley problem.

Yeah, Dad doesn't feel as much sadness for killing the invasive plants. He used to, but has since realized "fuck 'em"
He hates that they choke out the native stuff. Every time I go visit he points out the Chinese Tallow that his neighbors allow to spread onto his land. "They like them cause they're pretty" he sneers.
