Pulled the 5 year old off the bus after yet another substitute driver dropped her off 500ft from the house, on the wrong side of the road, and then ALMOST HIT HER WITH THE BUS when she tried to cross the street.

Wife had to jump in the damn street and yell for the driver to stop.

We're done with the bus until they can stabilize their drivers. The regular driver is great, but they have subs like 3 times a week these days, and theyre not even the same morning to night. They dont have lists of dropoff points, and rely on the kids to tell them where to stop, and then yell at the kids when they go the wrong way.
that's a big yikes

What kinda shit is this?
Our school bus drivers growing up you could set your watch to and we were 11 country miles and many stops away from the school and they knew every kid by name and where they lived.
Why all the subs?
Is it a deal where part-timers or temp workers just do it whenever or retired folks that do it on the side except when their consternation or their knees say no?
They need to pay more to attract better people to the job?
You don't just drop little elementary kids off "eh, close enough" or rely on them to tell you, the alleged adult, where to go.

Massive driver shortage.

Massive driver shortage.
I keep hearing that word shortage in all kinds of businesses yet there aren't any less people than there used to be. More like shortage of people willing to do X for X pay, which in theory means you increase the pay offer to attract more and/or better bus drivers.

I doubt driving a school bus paid very well back then either but seems like folks were more like ok I'm doing this, I'm gonna take care of the little ones and get them where they need to go and not run over them in the process and I'll argue about the pay with the grown-ups later but I'm not gonna half-ass driving the kids around.
That sort of ethos or "community responsibility" seems to be lacking nowdays, or maybe I'm just getting older and more crotchety.

not here. They all were on strike for a 5% raise...... which brought them up to 18 an hour. 3 hours a day at 18 bucks an hour doesnt pay the bills.

Maybe they could pick up a few extra bucks helping deliver the mail in between picking up and dropping off the kids. Lord knows the post office could use the help.

Yeah pretty sure it is the same here. Part-time job, and try to find a 2nd job to fill in after those weird hours. Hard to do. Unless you like UberEats or Lyft or whatever in between school routes.

I drive the kids 17 miles to their charter school. Lots of traffic so it averages 35 minutes.
We listen to albums along the way. I bombard them with fogey music like zeppelin Beatles yes miles mingus Freddie Hubbard etc. We have One Request Fridays because I can only.stand to hear two techno songs.per week.

We are shopping for a new school now that we pay massive taxes and live in a decent district.
Kids hate their current school and we hate it for other reasons.
The biggest proponent for possibe change would be Gabe who's on the autism spectrum.
Charter Schools don't follow school district rules, because they aren't in a district.

one thing relating to this to keep in mind in deciding between regular public school, charter school, and private school is that charter schools are still public schools and as sucy, FAPE applies so they'll have to provide any special education/IEP/504 accomodations that are required for him, whereas private schools may choose to provide that, but aren't required.

this may be old news for you and/or exactly what you were talking about, I just wasn't entirely clear from your post exactly what you meant & just wanted to be sure, so please accept it in the spirit of being helpful just in case it isn't known that it's intended as and not in the spirit of being an insufferable know-it-all that explains shit you already know to you that I'm frequently perceived as

They are required to but fight it tooth and nail August. We're tired. There's no SPED. Most of gabes 504 involves reports on how he acts out in P.E.
I'm extremely restrained for a Nukes. My head says "really? You mean an autistic kid acted out during competitive sports which trigger the fuck out of him? No fucking way! I'm shocked!"
Instead I inquired as to whether he can opt out of P.E.
The answer is yes, beginning next year.
Whoohoo!
My kids are orange belts in Taekwondo, they get plenty of physical education.
