Peru is pretty nice a lot of the time and like some parts of the US mountain west it's a fairly short trip to go up in elevation to cooler and dryer or down to warmer and wetter.
My cousin and his then girlfriend now wife got work teaching American school down there in the 80s, maybe even late 70s and loved it so much they stayed for like 20-25 years. It's a beautiful country.
