4 year old started martial arts at a small local place yesterday. Seems like she'll enjoy it if she doesnt get bored.

It was that or ballet, and id prefer she not end up with fucked-up feet by age 10.

We’re starting gymnastics next month. With how much she bounces in rolled all over my house and I think She will enjoy it.

Nice. There's a lot of good stuff that can come out of martial arts.

While its certainly not the core tenet, nor the main intent of the art, i would not mind at all her being able to defend herself as a teenager. Far far too many women get assaulted at some point in their life.

It's a shame that the problem has to be approached from a victims point of view. Not being in position where one feels powerless is good though. I dated a girl in high school that had a black belt in taekwondo. She was being harassed by some piece of shit that was constantly grabbing her ass. I had planned to have a talk with him about it, but she ended up spin kicking him in the face. The conversation was more of me laughing at him for a 5'2" girl beating his ass.

But I what I was really thinking about was the discipline, confidence, and body awareness that are huge part of studying martial arts.

yep, i never did any of it myself, but those things are applicable to pretty much every aspect of life, not the just off chance that you need a defense in a shitty situation, which hopefully is a rare occurrence.

ouch, strike this. Bait and switch pricing. Was advertised as 99 bucks a month, 4 classes a week which seemed like a great deal

Is actually 200 a month, 2 classes a week.

feel bad for the kid, gonna look around at hte other academies and see if anyone else is more reasonable.

well damn, the boy didn't make it into the private high school we tried him out for.

I'm not surprised. Disappointed, but not surprised. He's put exactly 0 effort into the half of middle school he's attended virtually.

aw that sucks

Was it like a college application process where theres all this bullshit "provide you're well rounded" stuff, or just straight up academic testing?

public schools not great in your neighborhood? Or is it just a good enough named private school that it opens doors further in life (which is bullshit, but reality)

It was both. Frankly, it was pretty exhausting the amount of hoops to jump through.
My youngest got into an International Academy for HS. Testing and interview, followed by lottery. Super competitive, lots of pissed parents. Had to drive her to school for 4 years but the free ride Honor's college scholarship made it worthwhile. Frigging kids, youth wasted.
