Oh no. That was beyond my budget build. All in, my Plex/PiHole RPi 4 cost like $90. I already had the hard drive. I knew that I would be the only one using it. The cost of running it was also a factor when I went for the build.

I had Plex running on an Ubuntu 32bit powered Cyrix build. It was an old XP machine for running a billboard. It couldn't transcode anything. You could play 720p videos over HDMI, but that's about it. Just needed something a tiny bit better. I do wish that it was a bit more powerful to handle NAS duties using eSATA. USB 3 is too slow to do heavy data usage.
130 for the nuc Optiplex 7040. Passmark of 5000 or so

ha, cyrix. Thats a name ive not heard in a long time.

i5-6500te

around 45 watts flat out, 7-9 idle
That's not too bad.. Does it have configurable power options beyond normal bios stuff? Network activity standby would be dope. I can't even get my RPi fan to shut off when it's not being used.

honestly havent checked. Its silent, even at 100% CPU, so i dont actually think it has any fans outside of the laptop style blower on the cpu.

I bet it does though, it was designed as a "thin client", which always have a ton of power options

Just unplug the fan, the RPi doesn't need one, as long as the enclosure it's in is reasonably vented.

Yeah.. I probably could since it's rarely under load. Maybe write a script to monitor temps and send me an email when it gets too high. I've never really looked at the temps. I just bought the RPi 4 Canakit and put it together not knowing what temps it would be running.

Stoopid laptop is back at it again.

My 2013 Macbook Pro's right side fan's bearing is just about done shitting the bed. It manages to draw too much amperage to get to the requested speed when on battery, then the laptop goes completely braindead - backlight on the screen, but that's it, no picture, nothing.

The one that's bad is, of course, not available from iFixit, so I ordered some new ones off Amazon. Maybe they won't be cheap shit, but I'm not holding my breath.

what was that old adage about macs being better cause the hardware again?
I'll give my 2009 Macbook Pro this: it's displayed considerably more gumption in the face of adversity than this 2013 has.

Otherwise, I'd say that all of my macs have held up fairly well as compared to the HPs that HP forced on me during the same period.
