Apparently with a laptop they can simulate keyless entry. They need the VIN though. I covered my VIN on the dash on Saturday, but they may have been by earlier scouting.

They don't need the VIN to do a relay attack on proximity keys.
Two people carry a couple of RF repeaters that are built for the purpose... one person stands next to your front door within RF reach of your keys, another stands next to the car, car thinks that the key is next to it and they can unlock it. They hop in and start it and off they go.
Not leaving your keys by the front door, or putting them in a metal box or something when you're home, is one way to avoid it. But that's a pain in the ass.
