thank you! I try to explain everything I can to her (y'all know I'm not one for brevity and I live for explaining a thing to death lol) and so even before she could really understand stuff, I just talked to her about everything, like how we have to wait for her milk to warm up because we are waiting for the warm water atoms to make the cold milk atoms speed up, or like she loves halloween and bats so I told her a bunch about nocturnal and diurnal and crepuscular animals. receptive language usually outpaces expressive language, so I just try to talk to her lots about how everything works and even if she doesn't quite grasp it yet, or at least can't explain stuff back to me, I'm hoping I'm helping teach her that curiosity is good and that we will support it. I try to make sure I have lots of books, and we cycle through new ones as well as revisiting old favorites, & I make sure to get a decent mix of sciency stuff and normal kids entertainment. I've got one really cool kid's book about insects that she likes and it always makes her want to go read the very hungry caterpillar next. she loves the "pillars" and the "otherflies" they turn into lol

I figured as much and again, good job, truly warms my heart. Wish my DIL would do half that much - my grandkids are dumb as stumps and aren't encouraged it learn anything. Actually, the grandson seems quite clever/smart, just not given anything but junk toys, few books. smh. A mind is a terrible thing to waste.

Give him a "vintage" erector set.
The new ones just look like a preplanned kit, like to assemble a crane or whatever.
The old ones we had were just a bunch of nuts and bolts and trusses and pulleys and things. Had to actually figure out and design and build from raw parts the machine you were gonna then use to build the building or whatever you also designed from scratch. Took a lot more imagination and learning how things work, why they don't work, how to improve them, etc. Or maybe ours was just missing the directions who knows.

You know, I might do that. OUr family was NUTS for ES - we built all the shit, the oil derrick, etc. My oldest brother, despite being on welfare, would always buy ES parts at Salvation Army or wherever. When he passed I grabbed his stash, probably close to 100 lbs. The rich hipster things is to have someone come build a big ES construction at your home. Serious. Few grand.
But the real issue is my DIL: she doesn't work(doesn't drink or drug), keeps the house neat as a pin. Feeds the kids and then kinda parks herself. The kids have nothing but shit toys, no books. Not a bookshelf in the entire house. Maybe that's odd to me because I'm one of those with a BS in every room and a few in some others. ?Why are things like this - they be following the KJ Bible to the letter. smh, smh.

Not my business but..."neat as a pin" and "kids" don't really go together. Especially the stuff about books, and toys that don't make you think, etc.
I'd call that environment "sterile". Good for hospitals, not for homes.

You nailed it. It's almost like an alcoholic housespouse who keeps things simple so they can control the environment. Keep the kids in - you always know where they are. My son wasn't raised that way but . anyway. GRandson gets up early like me - we hung out under his bunk bed for an hour before the rest of them got up. I talked to him about the ways of the early riser and how not to get yourself in trouble with those who are not. I suppose if I give him Erector set I should buy his mom a magnetic jobsite pickup tool.

You always got sidetracked in the "L"s for them long-titted ladies in the tropics.

Well they were "exotic", meaning they didn't look like those maternity bra models in the JCPenney catalog.

You know if you held it at an angle and looked real hard you could almost see it. Almost.

my house is constantly a wreck between the kiddo and my own inability to keep up with a mess, but I don't feel bad about it bc most of the mess is puzzles and blocks and megabloks and books, and while we try to at least put those things back as we can, I know she's building tons of skills when she plays with them. my house growing up was also a wreck, so I can't speak to that, but my parents were big on the "kids should be seen but not heard" and "grow the fuck up" lifestyle, and while I used to get tons of compliments about being well behaved and mature, it was definitely more a case of just basically learning to fear doing or saying anything.

My house is constantly a wreck and I have no kids here. It's not so much a wreck as a bit of science lab environment. My wife is very indulgent - I have 20+ house plants including a 14' tree in our foyer, mushrooms growing in a closed environment in a spare bedroom where our workout gear is. 5 kilns in our basement, 6 basses, enough gear for 3 complete PA setups, guitars, real piano, 3 synths, bass amps, recording gear. That's just 3 rooms and the foyer.
Our house growing up was full of similar - my dad was always pulling something apart and putting something back together.
