I was all settled in for a chilled night watching films yesterday when I got a message from a friends ex husband saying she had been speaking to him and was suicidal. Cue me calling her and getting her to stop drinking and come to sleep at my house to get her head together. This morning she's still a wreck and her partner appears to have left her. She's inside on the phone to him. God knows the state she'll be in after this call. Dammit.

Doesn't she know you're on vacation!

@fly

Dad generally doesn't use credit or debit cards since his number got lifted from a scanner a few years ago. He's been thinking that he should get a pre-paid card that he can load up as needed. Sounded like something you've done before, so I wanted to see if you had a suggestion on which one to get.
I think I remember that you used to mess with Vanilla pre-paids?

Good for you for being available for her, and not just letting the call go to voice mail.

Are they the best option
How easy are they to reload
Is there anything you need to be careful of with them (outside of normal card usage)
I dunno, anything that would be of interest to an old retired guy

I have a 500$ credit card with my credit union. I just pay it in full every time I use it, before the interest hits. Might be worth looking into.

How easy are they to reload = super easy and you can even reload online

Is there anything you need to be careful of with them (outside of normal card usage) = i thiiiiink there’s a reloading fee AND a user fee when you first activate it
I dunno, anything that would be of interest to an old retired guy = some places don’t accept them (few but some)
you can purchase online too, but again some places won’t accept (few but some)

also the best cards were the pay per use CC from Money Mart (not sure if they still have them) but you pay a $30+ fee per year and you bypass all these stupid charges and you can track everything online.
drop $500 in and you’re good to go

wait to see what @fly can chime in with, he will know the nitty gritty

edit: I just remembered, for example if you want to rent a hotel room with the vanilla card you can’t do that but with the money mart cards you can.
It’s a credit card with your name on it and nowhere on the card does it say that it’s a preloaded card and like the vanilla cards
