The problem with distortion is it wrecks the P bass 'bump'
I don't have a p bass so I guess I'm safe lol. Right now all I have is a (MXR m80 bass DI + distortion) and the drive on my sansamp BDDI. The M80 is very smooth and heavy with a blend knob that brings the bottom back in. The only issue I have with it is, it automatically turns on a mid scooped "color eq" when the distortion is enabled. It sounds fine but I have to run it straight into the power amp so it doesn't clash with may amp's pre.

The BDDI drive sounds uneven all across the spectrum. It's a great emulation if it's what you want, like if you're in a Police cover band. It's just not for me. Imo it takes away the sparkle that comes from those insanely scooped mids. I pretty much only use the sansamp for Country.

Have you tried a traynor head straight in , I found the mythical svt sizzle there .

The pork loin doesn't kill mids like that. You can get the big low B tone, just color the top of it.

Really the adjustment goes from "barely even audible" to "ok that's something but it still fits with country or rhythm&blues" to "ok that's rock-n-roll".

Can also adjust the filters inside the pedal.

It's not really a dirt pedal, it's a flavor pedal that can get just a little dirty if you massage it just right.

Yes there's 3 more adjustments inside the pedal in addition to the 5 on top. It would be cooler if they were all on top but I assume they did that because it was taking up a lot of real estate already.

The ones inside are more like filter corners or things you would adjust to your liking and leave alone but it would still be cool if they were all on top.

It looks complex. My guitarist buddy had one. He was never able to dial it in.

This morning I was messing with that sansamp drive. I managed to get it more evened out after boosting all the mids on a graphic eq pedal. That pedal desperately needs more control of the mids. That would be why there's a mid knob on the newer one.

I was going to suggest two Sansamps but I don’t know nuthin. I used to have two and used one strictly for overdrivish effect. If I needed it nastier, that’s what the Big Muff was for.

Again, know nuthin.

PS

I haven’t touched an instrument in weeks now yet I still consider buying a short scale five string if a second round of CovidCash makes its way to us. If I thought I’d live long enough to enjoy it, it would be a Kiesel Vader.

Ibanez TMB-35 (?) is two fiddy!

I think I'd like the drive on the sansamp a lot if it were separate from the preamp. That preamp is great for country (real country) and does good with classic rock (or just medium heavy rock in general, IF YOU HAVE A WAY TO BOOST MIDS). That's about all I would want to use it for.

To be honest though, most bass tones work with most styles of music. I'm just being pretentious.

I've wanted a 34-35" scale 5 string with tight af string spacing for a while. I would mostly stay at the 5th fret or higher. If I stay high up like that it would feel shorter than a short scale and I'd have the low B for the occasionally treat.

The thought crossed my mind to convert a 4-string P bass to a 5-string. I know how much you love my adventurous ideas.

Remind me if that second wave of CovidCash happens. I’ll send you the Nukes SX. The string spacing on that is practically on par with a guitar, or like you mentioned, five strings on a four string neck. Super tight.

And it plays real fuckin nice too. Suoer low, buzz free action.

prefer a couple of drive pedals in chain rather than just one but otherwise the vtdi is quite nice also the small mxr classic fuzz and also the dual hotcakes made by my friend

they were made by a drummer of a band for the guitarist who used ac30s and so these are very well suited for those amps but i asked my friend to make a bass version because i like the break up sound especially when used for synth-y tones :)

The Behringer SF-300 Super Fuzz is fun on bass. If not just to mess around for a bit.
I run two amps, one on top of the other. One clean and one almost always dirty or otherwise effected in some way.
So kicking on the SF gets all kinds of nasty while still keeping tone and some clarity depending on how I run the volumes.
Since there are no gigs to be had at the moment I can do what I want.
I'm the only one listening.
By choice anyway.
