GAY The Useless Travel Thread

There has to be a better way to make great bourbon. For example, throw charred staves in some sort of inert metal/plastic/smegma barrel. You still get the movement through wood without the gigantic waste of water. And if you use some sort of metal, you'll get faster temperature swings.

Obviously, it couldn't be called bourbon then, but there has to be some technology that we use these days for Christ's sake.

You're welcome to argue (and I'm sure you will) about how terrible my idea is, but you're missing the point. There HAS to be a better way.
You can buy small kits that do that.

Basically moonshine with charred wooden bits and a glass bottle, or a small oak cask that's charred on the inside. A couple friends have done it. I've been interested in playing with doing it but with different woods than oak.

I don't think it scales well, but there are a couple of distilleries that are playing with it.

Who cares?

It's not like there's a great shortage of bourbon.
There sorta is, which is why (I think it was) Buffalo Trace is doing a $1B expansion. Which seems crazy for an industry that nearly died in the 80s and 90s. They were actually leasing out their fermentors and shit to Coke to make New Coke at the time because money was fucking tight.

Eh, I'm sure if the economics and the marketing make sense (would it really be a Cuban cigar if it weren't hand-rolled on the thighs of virgins?), the bubbas in charge down there will make it happen.

True, you'd have to offset your distillery savings with marketing education.

Do millennials drink brown liquor?

Was reading an article about craft breweries in places like Settle and Austin. They're under immense pressure to come out with n ew beers constantly because millennials don't like to drink the same beer twice.
Absolutely. In fact, one of the tour guides straight up said that the reason they're in business is that millennials started drinking brown spirits because they didn't want to drink vodka.

Depends on your definition of "better" I bet.

Better for efficiency and consistency in mass production, sure. McDonalds is "better" at that too. Your local joint that forms the patties and chops the toppings by hand not so much. Which one is "better" though?

People care more about flavor these days, so the focus is shifting from simply getting fucked up.

People who claim they drink vodka for the flavor are delusional at best, mentally ill otherwise.

Or maybe you're just making another pappy stand...

Checking bags at any other airport I've been to other than Tampa is a complete pain in the dick.

Airport: Oh hai, I see you've arrived. We'll try to get your bags to you in the next 45 minutes.

Tampa airport belt: Where the fuck have you been? This is my second go-around.
