Tampa Hurricane Dorian 2019

370,000 without power in Nova Scotia.

Good job Canada. I blame your socialist healthcare.
Peaked at 400,000 customers without power. And that's customers (eg, # of power meters), not people. There's a hair over 500,000 customers in the whole province.

We never lost power. Our house is on the side of a hill facing west, and most of the wind we got was southwesterly, so we were well shielded from the brunt of the wind. Other than a few branches off trees, all is good. Infrastructure up here is fucked though, have internet but telephone service is out on both my landline and cellphone.

Halifax proper got hit pretty hard. Lots of ripped up trees, plus this happened:

I've always pictured the wickster having a body pillow with an anime character on it.

But hey, maybe there's one floating around out there in the flood water that he can have, that's a little less used than his.

It’s weird whenever cranes collapse, how they look like they’re made from aluminum foil or solder.

I have a hunch accident rates for cranes are a lot higher than we’re being told. Like whenever they install one, they know it’s a 50/50 that suckers not gonna last.

They're incredibly strong up and down. Not really meant to go sideways.

Commercial construction I've worked on they started out making the tower crane shorter, then kept adding on to it as the building got taller. Majority of it is attached to the building then instead of being a pole sticking up in the air all by itself.

True, but the failure rate is incredibly high. I don’t have the numbers in front of me, but I recently heard that there are only about 65 cranes in action on any given day in the US, and it sure seems like a few come down every year.

It’s literally like a 87% failure rate.

I doubt those numbers. There's probably a half dozen or more active at any given moment just in my town alone.
As much as they get used they're actually pretty safe.

That’s the same thing I thought. I can see at least six just between here and downtown Portland.

I blame a myself a.

But it could also be NPR. Seattle had 65 at the time I “remember” “hearing” it.

For every sensational event broadcast on the "news" they should be forced to report that while that was happening 7 million other people had a fairly normal uneventful day.

Failure rates on construction cranes are pretty much negligible. There's about 50 of them across Halifax right now, and 49 of them shrugged off the hurricane and stayed up because they're designed to handle it.

Something was either fucked up with the crane, or the people who were responsible for installing/operating the thing fucked up.
