Accelerated away from a light the other day. Saw a puff of smoke behind the truck.

Despite not being able to replicate it I'm worried there is something fucky with my valvetrain.
I read this as "Accelerated away from light" for a moment, and was impressed you had discovered faster than light travel.

I was slightly surprised you didn't just go with a custom cam over lifting that valvetrain. If this is the engine you were rebuilding recently.
Hopefully it was an isolated thing.

Welp, got my "Moog" front lower left control arm for the Audi, and it's another Moog box with a shitball Chinesium "BAW" arm in it.

Guess I threw $60 away on shit.

I'll go get the ones that all the Audi guys run now (TRW) and stop trying to support American companies.

Wtf man that's happened enough times to be something more than some coincidence.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that Moog is now reboxing Chinesium parts.

Idk how or where that stuff gets boxed and distributed but if it's some packaging company that does it for multiple suppliers or something it seems they mis-boxed a whole order.

If it's in house then ya it's just rebranded Chinese.

Well, the decent one I got has a moog-branded ball joint pressed in. The BAW one does not. The BAW arm is also about a pound heavier than the Moog unit, which leads me to believe there might be some differences in metallurgy as well.

I figured that since I got one that was actually in-house, the other side would be as well. I must have gotten in on the very tail end of inventory before they offshored their production.

You'd think they'd QC stuff like that to preserve the brand/status but I bet a lot of people, including shops, don't pay as close attention to it as you are.

All I want is some reasonable level of confidence that it's made out of something that isn't going to break and send me right to the scene of the accident.

Chinese are certainly capable of making good stuff if that's what's specified, and the people here do routine QC but who knows what's really going on. Heavier doesn't necessarily mean stronger or better.

If they spend the extra $0.0000005 to use decent steel in each control arm, it might impact their mighty bottom line.

Unrelated but one of the bass amp manufacturers Gallien-Krueger actually moved some production back here from China due to QC issues.
By the time the stuff gets here and problems start showing up you can already be several months and thousands of units deep in shit.

Aesthetic consideration.

I have the Euro tail lights for my Audi shitwagon. Swapping them on takes a different filler panel for the license plate (since the plates are different size in Euro-land).

I'm going to put them on, because they're in nicer condition than my American tail lights.

However, the filler panel for the license plate is a substantially different color than the body (forest green as opposed to spermy white)

I see a lot of guys going with a contrasting color, some going with a red color matched to the brake lenses, and some going with body color. I've already got some of the body color (well, whatever DuPont's formulary thinks the color is, a 3-stage base/mid/clear combo), because I've got some shit to repaint on the shitwagon itself already.

Not leaning towards the red, but here's a pic anyhow (this one's the same color as mine):

Here's the scheme I'm leaning towards right now (low gloss or matte black/gunmetal):

Anyone care to chime in with helpful aesthetic advice?
