That reminds me, it's about time to upgrade my storage array, since I've already fucked the pony on everything else on the server.

Thinking 8TB is about the sweet spot. Probably go HGST since they've got the best warranty now.

edit: well n/m, I guess they don't sell those new anymore. Also, I want 5400RPM, not 7200RPM.

8tb is definitely the sweet spot.

If you're trying to save money, the shucked WD's are a pretty solid option. If you're not, yeah, HGST all the way

well shit. You know, i still have em. Never ended up needing to use them to transition to unraid.

you still need em?

I'm always trying to save money, but rarely actually do.

Hard disks are one of those cardboard vs. leather boots scenarios for me. Even with my frankly ridiculous backup regimen (RAID to Crashplan to BluRay), I'm still paranoid about data loss (esp. when data loss is my photos).

Theyre the 4tb seagates listed there. Still statistically much higher than the others im running (HGST and toshibas), but at least not dismally so like seagates used to be (15+ % failure rates)
Not to jinx myself, but I've yet to have one of mine fail. The only drives I've lost was a WD, and all those Samsungs.

not that these arent bascially new, but yeah.

They've just had badblocks run on em to weed out an infant failures, then got stored safely.
