It's not required at all here, but they suggest it simply because hurricanes. After a big one, assuming your house is still standing, if you've got that shit down, you give two fucks that it will take 3 months to get a roofer out to replace your shingles.

I did on my old place in Maine. The roof would have 75% covered anyway because of it's design, so why not cover it all.

And one of the subsequent owners took the directv dish off and didn't plug the holes properly, so there are water stains in the ceiling underneath it in my old office. Saw it in the real estate pics zillow alerted me to last year.
