This shit is pretty damned cool.

Take about 20-40 pictures of an object, while you move around it in a circle, varying your angles. Hit the process button, get a 3D capture of it. Be able to use it to make 3D prints and such

Learning curve thus far is a little steep, but it's a pretty neat tool.

I'd like to do a 3D printing business, but I have no idea how I'd make it work. I just like the idea that its a fucking Star Trek replicator.

They're rolling out 3d printing to all the UPS stores around the country.

They are so cheap you'd have to get an incredibly high quality one, or offer something that no one else does to make any money.

I can pay $10 to the school and get 8 hours of printing

And prices are falling so fast that as soon as you bought a high end one, it would cost 50% less. I dunno, its just so fscking cool

Exactly

If you really want to, look into chemicals other than the ones normally used. You might be able to get a real business going if you could get something that wasn't soluble in gasoline and had some heat-resistance.

I'd make 5 ft tall replicas of all the classic adult swim characters and nail their feet to my ceiling.

That looks pretty cool actually.

I need to get a visor clip for the A4, I'm not paying the dealer 70 fucking bucks for one, and I'm gonna try 3D printing a replacement. Maybe I'll yank the good one out of the car and try scanning it with this app.

It's a little limited. You might need to mock up some sort of stand so that you have a full model of it.

I'm working on a model of the cylinders that I mentioned needing to seal in the Automotive thread

Maybe I'll just bang out a new clip by measuring everything with my calipers.

So what's a good STL editor? I haven't actually done any 3D modelling other than 3DS back in the day, and Sketchup.

I'm not sure what is out there that's free-ish. I use Solidworks, but that costs moneys.
I should be able to build you a model off of about half a dozen good pictures with measurements if you can't find anything.

Might take you up on that. You any good at sketchup? I'll bang out a mockup in that if it helps.

I've never messed with Sketchup, honestly. It looks like it supports dxf and 3ds files though, both of which Solidworks uses.

I think dxfs are only 2D though. Not a big deal though.
