I have decided to go ahead with my threats of returning to the land of the free - and it may be that I need your expert help to ensure I don't get tragically lost - kidnapped or murdered

I have persuaded a lovely drunken Irish man to accompany me on the venture - assuming he is not detained at the border

The dates are likely to be [depending on flights which will be booked shortly] March 5th til two weeks after that - Irishmans birthday is on the 7th so I was thinking of doing something nice on that date involving drink and luckily it's a Friday

I have no idea how long it will take to drive upwards but google maps reckons 18hours if I just go directly up to Boston - of course this will not happen

If anyone would like to give us tips - join us for a while or indeed have us visit let me know and we shall create a vague plan!

Also realistic tips on car rental would be much appreciated

You are going to need a credit card with a high limit or an extra one that you don't plan on buying shit with. They are going to put a $300-$700 hold on it. Cannot be a debit card.

You are going to need a license that is more than one year old at some rental agencies.

They don't always offer it at the counter so you may need to ASK for liability insurance if your insurance in the UK doesnt cover you here (I'd just get it, it's only $10~ a day and covers any accidents).

There might be a surcharge if you are under 25.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

I wouldnt do it. Driving around NYC and Boston is NOT for beginners: http://www.amtrak.com/home

Ive been there. UK is nothing like bypass roads in NJ/NYC area. City streets are not as crazy in US, yes, but on local highways lol. My city is pretty small and it's still bumper to bumper 85mph with traffic merging from both sides on weekdays.

Itll be an adventure I guess.

So the plan is to start from Florida and drive up the coast?

Hmm... let me ponder this, there is lots of trouble you can get into. :D

Why should she care about liability?

Someone make sure to get dash cam footage of her driving on the wrong side of the road and plowing into a church bus full of orphans
