Switzerland will vote on giving every adult in the country a $2,800 check every month.

By gathering over 100,000 signatures – which they delivered last Friday along with 8 million 5-cent coins representing the country’s population – activists have secured a vote by Switzerland’s parliament on an audacious proposal: providing a basic monthly income of about $2,800 U.S. dollars to each adult in the country. (A date for the vote hasn’t yet been set.) Such basic income proposals, which have drawn increased attention since the 2008 financial crash, offer a night-and-day contrast to the current U.S. debate over what to cut and by how much.

I think I know where I want to live forever and ever and ever and ever!

I just have to ask how theyre funding this?
If its from taxes, how about just giving tax breaks instead?

The numbers wouldn't be parallel. Some pay a lot more than others in tax. This seems to be a flat rate @$2,400/month.

Could be a number of different ways they fund this. Corporate tax, Tourism, not allowing corporations to suck capital out of the economy? I dunno.

Unless Switzerland is making a killing off of banks with their neutrality rules in place, I don't see how they can work this.

Switzerlands GDP per capita is $45K. So they have the money per person to do this, they just have reallocate the funds from other program/systems.

Switzerland is known for it's relatively low tax rate actually. It's mandated in their constitution.

It's seriously strange move. They are very canton independent.

True it is around 20%, though they may not need a high corporate tax rate for this.

This program will cost about $20 billion a year. Switzerland has federal income tax, municipal taxes, a withholding tax, and a VAT tax. The Swiss GDP was $632 billion last year, with an annual growth rate of about 2.1% forecast. GDP growth has moderately fluctuated for the past 5 years. GDP per capita was $55k last year.

They can handle it.

I was trying that route but could find enough figures.
