GAY Petition to move the Olympics to Vancouver

Wow, this is what I get for not paying attention to the news. Are they really not allowing gay athletes to compete? How do they know who is gay?

The hand holding and making out in the Olympic village would give it away.

I don't think they're necessarily not allowing them to compete, however it is illegal to be gay there.

They aren't banning gay athletes.

The issue is Russia's law banning non-traditional sexuality propaganda, as they call it.

Basically, pro-gay banners, signs, t-shirts, pins, etc etc etc is verboten. It's not too unlike a standing rule that the IOC already has in regards to banning political statements by athletes.

That's it. That's all it is. They aren't banning gays, they aren't disallowing gay athletes to play. They just are against LBGT politicizing.

Oh, well that I'm okay with. I think its a little tacky to hold up a banner talking about what you do in the bedroom anyway. I can sort of see it at a protest, but you wouldn't see me going to an NFL game with a banner that says "Legalize sodomy so my husband can cram his giant cock up my tiny button hole without feeling a little guilty later!"

some gay people that protest do seem awfully publicly adamant about the intimate details of their life. Its like its a defense mechanism, because they know some people object to their desires, they act out by shoving those desires in the peoples faces in some sort of petty attempt at shock value (see: gay parades with people walking around naked, etc etc. That only re-enforces the stereotype that being gay is about lewdness and promiscuity).

Not quite as cut and dried as that. Russia is treating LBGT (LGBT? TGLB? :iono:) protesters at least as badly as the south treated equal rites protesters in the 60s.
It isnt about them holding up a sign that says "I like a lot of assplay" it is about them being denied basic rights.

Well shit, gay people look like you or me (more you than me), it isnt like when someone is visibly different. How else are they supposed to show they are different?

no, they dont. (unless your comment was sarcasm, which it may have been)

Point being, most people who are gay ARENT different. Theyre everyday joe's like you and me, they just happen to like dudes. Like any unique charactaristic, whether that be liking punk music, or smoking weed, or flying a plane, some people just like doing that thing, and some people make it a defining characteristic of their life. The gay people who whip their dongs around at parades are equivalent to the punk rockers with the 4 foot tall mohawks are equivalent to the stoners that wont shut up about weed and everything they wear is made of hemp.

If someone is protesting something, doesnt it make sense that they will emphasize that aspect of themselves that is being suppressed? Guy I know protests in heels, a lot of body paint, and not a lot else. The rest of the time he has an effeminate manner of talking and that is the only tip off (until he gets drunk, or you find out he lives and works in Ybor)

I get that, but I hardly think a sporting event is the right place to be discussing this. Also, there's countries all over the world where people are being denied their basic human rights. We didn't petition to move the Olympics when it was China and they are deplorable to their people. It's only recently that WE even started to allow our gays to have their rights and almost half the country is still opposed, so how come we suddenly get to be all high and mighty. And when is the last time political change happened from people holding up banners at sporting events?

In China there was no prospect for athletes to be arrested merely for being gay. That is the case here.

Ugh. Someone tell me what the real problem is here? I'm done discussing this until I have credible sources telling us what is really happening or what the threat really is here. I was discussing protesting at the Olympics. Your link and your comments imply there's something more sinister going on. Duke said the issue was just that the Russians are not allowing politically motivated banners and gear at the Olympics. You guys work this out and get back to me.

Where is the correct place to address this issue, considering what happens when the people concerned with it try to openly protest?
I don't really think there is any government involved in this petition, just people from all over the world, so I am not sure what you mean by "we"
As for political change, there will never be any unless there is awareness.

Have you been hiding under a rock? Russia just made it illegal to be gay in Russia. It's a jailable offense.
