View Full Version : My Evening Workout

So today I decided that my house workout, although helping, was not enough. I got my walking shoes on and started walking down Starkey. I had a plan to walk about 2 miles and turn back. I made it about 2 miles down and noticed a gym that I have noticed in the past, kinda had it in my head too and stopped in. I ended up just signing up for a month membership to see if I like it there. Worked out for about 30 minutes, upper body and it looked like it was gonna rain so I walked home.

Total Today ~3+ or so miles walking and 30 minute workout.

Food intake - Roast Beef Sandwhich, 3 thin slices on wheat, piece of cheese just cause:P

Drink Intake - 6 bottles of water, 1 on the way to the gym rest at work, 1 more now.

I doubt I will remember to post everyday but I am going to try. I am really going to put my mind to this and work my ass off for it. I figure the hour walk a day to the gym and back plus 30 minutes weights is a good start. If I drive there, mid day on weekend is to hot, I will do treadmill for an hour to make up for it.

Thanks for the ongoing support, beside wanting it for myself you guys are very encouraging and make me want to push harder.

Feel free to post more workout ideas, your current workout or whatever you want. I didnt make it on-topic so you can post whatever, serious comments are really appreciated though!

Edit - I realize how long its been since I've worked out though cause I cant remember how to use half the machines. If anyone wants to point some shit out in that regard or good free weight(with no spot) exercises that would be great too!

My coworker DVR's stuff on FITtv. I did the same and that is about as far as I have gotten. She comes to work muscles aching so that channel must have some great (at home) exercises!

I bought a yoga ball a few months ago and haven't pumped it back up since the move. :( Please inspire me.

yeah, it's a "good" sore though man.. not an injury sore, just a "hey, i did something good for my body and health today" sore, not "i think i tore my ACL" sore .. thumbs up..

i'm actually gonna be in largo tomor, maybe we can hook up.. we can get over to that gym if they let you have visitors (for less than 10 bucks) and i'll walk you thru the equipment and share this killer workout i'm on right now..

i think it's known as circuit training:

shrugs
pushups
rows
curls
dips
etc.. some chest and shoulder exercises.. really good full upper body workout.. and only takes about 30 minutes.

pushups are really, really good man.

and yeah, good sleep is usually a byproduct of physical fitness. tho crown royal seems to put me right to sleep as well.

Yep, I do push-ups every morning and every evening. Its really hard because of my weight so I cant do that many but each week I can do more. If you are going to be down this area tomorrow I will pay for the workout. Its not a nice gym by any means, just a local spot with a good amount of free weights. When I went in yesterday at around 7 there was only about 10 people there so its nice to know you can use whatever you want. It would be great if you could show me some workouts though and how to use some of the machines for max benefit.

Does the gym have a trainer available to you? You'll see much better results much sooner if you lift in a manner specific to your goals. One thing to note: you cannot build muscle and lose fat at the same time. Well you can but if you try to both at the same time you will see little results because when you burn fat you burn muscle and when you build muscle you not only burn a lot less fat but you intake a lot more food that keeps your body from using its own fat stores.

So focus on one or the other. If you want to lose fat then focus on low weights and high reps. Keep your heartrate around 60% of max (HRmax is roughly 220 minus your age) to keep your body in fat burning mode. If you want to build muscle you'll have to do higher weights at lower reps but then it gets more complex because there are three types of muscle fibers to work with and different types of exercises achieve different results.

See if the gym has a personal trainer than can give you an hour of basic instruction on how to lift for your goals and how to lift properly. Remember that proper form is absolutely crucial; if you're going to lift with improper form you might as well not lift at all because you risk doing damage to your body. If you've never done a squat or a dip or a leg press then it'd be wise to have someone that knows what to look for be a spotter.

Good luck. :D

edit: oh and you should have a post-workout shake after lifting any significant amount. you need pure protein and some glucose and carbs immediately after a workout, within half an hour or so. if your diet matches your exercise plan you'll see better results a lot sooner

Yesterday I only consumed 2 sandwhichs, 1 at 4:30 and 1 after I worked out at like 7:30. Funny thing was the fact that I was not hungry for some reason. Normally I would eat more in the day but yesterday I just did not feel like eating. Even right now I am not hungry at all, which I dont know why. I know I need a consistent amount of intake to be healthy and nutrients because of the burning but I only eat when I am hungry.

I will check with a personal trainer but if Mingle is coming down tomorrow he knows quite a bit about it so I should be fine with what he has to offer. Yesterday I had just walked down there with not much intent to actually sign up but I did so I worked out for a good 30 minutes. I wanted to see what I had in me so I did larger weights, smaller reps but will lower the weights tonight. I have no need to get any larger and under all this fat I am still pretty strong so my main goal is weight loss. I worked out quite a bit when I was younger and was always in amazing shape but it was such a long time ago I forgot most of what I was taught. Good idea about the protein shake but I always thought that was for building muscle mass? Would it work well for trying to lose weight?

for that talk to a nutritionist :o even in fat loss regiments I've been told that a PWO is important because you're still breaking down muscle and your body needs protein with which to rebuild that muscle. without it the body starts pulling from other sources that you don't want it pulling from (insert lots of medical jargon here). again, get the advice of a professional :)

Can anyone tell me if Gatorade is ok for me to drink during the day or should it only be consumed during/after workout?

SemperFly
09-11-2007, 01:08 PM
Gatorade is a sports drink and should only be consumed as such. Drink it during the workout or in times when you need to rehydrate yourself. The whole point is to help athletes retain water; people who drink it while sitting on their ass are making themselves fat. It has a ton of carbs and a ton of salt that you do not need unless you're very active.

Well for some weird reason Gatorade AM does more for me then coffee does and I enjoy drinking it in the morning. Probably not a good idea then, dammit. Gotta be better than coffee with my spoon standing straight up though right? I dont like coffee without sugar and cream, lots of it :fly:

If you actually want to get in better shape at any noticeable rate you're going to need to change those little things, too. No booze, no soda, no Gatorade unless you just finished playing an hour or two of some strenuous sport and no coffee unless you're taking it black. Like your men.

I dont drink soda anymore. I rarely drink coffee unless I need it after a long night but now I have switched to Gatorade. I normally dont eat during the day so wouldnt that substitute for the Gatorade intake? I drink one normal size bottle on days that I am overly tired. My normal eating habits, unless I remember to pack a lunch dont start until 4pm when I have dinner. I know that needs to be changed but how bad is it to starve myself if I dont feel starved?

I dont even get hungry until about 3pm. Then by the time I get home around 4ish from work I eat and I dont eat that much. I have never really been a big eater, more of a big drinker which IMO is where I gained the most weight. Well that and a huge lack of physical activity.

SemperFly

uh no

The fact that you really don't eat during the day is bad. You're not going to get in better shape unless you actually do it right. You can't substitute one thing for the other, you either sack up and do it all the way or accept the fact that your way is going to take you a hell of a lot longer than the right way. Gatorade provides salt and carbs but no real nutrition. No, it doesn't make up for not eating.

Yes it's bad to starve yourself. You have to realize that for millions of years we evolved in the wild. It's only been the last few thousand years that humans have had stores of food so negate the natural desire to hunt and gather. Our bodies are still used to the idea that if we're not eating every few hours that means there's a food shortage and thus the body needs to go into conservation mode. So you don't eat until 4, your body is in starvation mode and then you infuse it with carbs, salts and some dinner. Every ounce of fat is going to be stored because your body is still in starvation mode, all that protein is not going to be used properly and all those carbs are also going to be stored up and turned into fat.

It doesn't matter when you get hungry. Eat a fucking breakfast. Eat something light every two or three hours. If you don't then you might as well light that gym membership on fire and burn that cash away because you're not making a damn bit of difference by just working out and then treating your body like crap. If anything you're doing even more damage to your body because you're putting more stress on it, destroying those muscles without giving your body the proper tools with which to rebuild them.

I don't know how many times this has to be reiterated.

If you want to do this you have to do it RIGHT.

I really appreciate it because I really dont know much. I have built up a normal system that I am used to and it is going to be difficult to break. My insight on it was "since I never work out and I start working out I will lose weight". I know now that I need to put the extra effort into it and I have been, just slowly. I have not gone off my diet to much but the last week I have been a little bad. My diet is kinda fuct though cause I dont really have anything set in stone, just eating healthy.

5 "small" meals a day man.

when i'm ON IT:

7 am--egg or even egg whites, maybe some lowfat cheese in it
10 am -- tuna or other protein
1 -- lunch.. protein and veggies
4 lil protein snack
6ish (post workout) you really should have a protein shake.

8ish.. light dinner, again, mostly protein and veggies, and def no bread, wheat or not.... if you're gonna do wheat and/or sugar, do it preworkout IMO, to burn it off during your workouts.

gotta run.

I just started back yesterday. My friend Luke and I have a bet for who loses more over the next 6 months.

Brad, check out this guy's site. He has good information on diet. Also, here are links for both 3 and 5 day workouts. Warm up on the cycle for 10 minutes or so when you get there and then try to do 30-45 mins of cardio when you're finished with weight training. It sucks, but I cut 30-35 pounds in 6 months doing this before.

Zac took a video of my weigh in on Sunday. I'm a mushy 229.5 lbs.

I'm keeping a photojournal on Luke's board and have posted my weigh in vid. That should keep me motivated given the fact that people will be watching my progress. If you'd like to share weekly pic updates I'll do that with you.

Oh, and there's that thing about the loser having to spring for dinner at Bern's...

Shawn, I dont see a link to the site you were talking about?

I know I live far away but if heading home from school any days you want to come walk to the gym and work out with me you are more then welcome. I will cover the cost of the day workout, probably not much anyways. As for cardio, I walk to the gym so that is about 45 minutes of walking a day. Also if the timing is right and you want a workout partner down there we can do the opposite. The truck goes in to get fixt Thursday so we will have it back by Friday, hopefully if it is just the heater core/coil thingy.

Edit - I dont have a scale but I weighed myself at Atoms house 2 weeks ago and I was at 255, down from 265. I should probably be down to 250 right now I would imagine but I am not sure.

The elevator broke in our old building once and I had to walk the stairs. These were no regular stairs, not steep but really long. I made it to about the 6th floor and had to take a 10 minute break. Its only 9 stories up, we used to be the top floor but they are large offices. It is the biggest building in clearwater, took me about 45 minutes to get up the stairs, lol. But that was before I even thought about working out.

Sorry, forgot to add links. I don't get out of school until 8:50 or 9:50 depending on the night so I work out in the AM. Also, walking isn't really a viable substitute for cardio. There should be a scale at the gym...and you have to put both feet on it ;)

I would like to do some tennis, although I haven't played in 15 years. I'm down for some swimming as well. Shit, we have this huge-ass resource (the beach) for which we pay out the ass on our insurance. We should probably utilize it...

Weekdays/nights are shot for me, but weekends I'd like to get something going.

Casey - We were trying to put a baseball pick-up game together a couple months ago but could find the players. I know you are probably more of a b-ball kinda guy but if you are interested there are a few women involved to so Janice would be more than welcome.

Shawn - Same for you and Amy if you guys would like to do this one Sunday at Putnum or the one on Alt 19, those are the smaller fields but would probably be better for us anyways :fly:.

As for other activities I am completely down for anything you guys want to do. Right now I am all about getting out of the dark bar's and getting into some sunlight/physical activities. I just need others who want to do the same which is hard since most of my friends are bar flies. Elliot and Dave would also be down for anything we want to come up with.

i will be honest, i will never be one to completely abandon the club scene, hell, i get money off that shit, but some balance would certainly help.

down for wknd softball. actually asked janice about a coed league this week, but her schedule prohibits it.

and something a little more central and than alt. 19 would help.

So do I!...

Well I did until some fucks vandalized it last week and ripped the metal railing completely out of the pool. Nobody can seem to figure out how they riped it right out of its setting, must have taken 3 pretty strong dudes. Now the pool is closed until the condo association can fix it, because of legalities you cannot have an open pool without a hand rail. Worst part is there was beer bottles everywhere so it was someone who lives here having a party. The cops said it is a felony crime though and if they find out who it was they will be auto-evicted from the complex.

I'm losing weight too. More slowly, but I really don't have like an issue with weight at the moment.

For the next two weeks I have real summer (no classes), so I'm going to work out 6 days a week, and eat better. I'm hoping to trim a little off, but mostly I just know it will feel good.

fa sho man.. glad to be of assistance. like i said, I know what you POSED to do, doesn't mean i always get it done.. lmao..

you're gonna be sore today my friend.

for you B:

5-10 min warmup to get the blood pumpin and muscles warmed up.

Shoot for 15 reps each. Go through circuit betw 1 and 3 times. only a 5 - 15 second break betw each exercise.

1. Shoulder shrugs
2. wide armed pushups
3. one arm, bent over rows
4. seated dumbell bicep curls.
5. tricep dips on the bench
6. breast stroke. upper arms parallel to the floor, REAL light weight.
7. bench press. either dumbell or straight bar.
8. tricep kick backs. bend forward, both arms same time, bend elbows, not shoulders
9. reverse flys, working the rear delt (shoulder)
10. lateral raise. working lateral (or side) delts/shoulder
11. close arm pushups (it is at this point that i begin to hate this workout)
12. Fly's (chest, laying on bench, 90 degrees straight up to 180 at the sides and back)
13. shoulder press aka military presses

may want to give yourself an entire 60 seconds right here before going thru it again.

not to put you on blast BeerAd, but i hope you found it insightful to hit that 4.0 on the treadmill. Brad doin' a 4 mile walk at "Pimpin in the Mall" pace.

Yeah, I was not walking at a fast enough pace to keep my heart rate up, thanks for pointing that out! I dont think my walk to the gym will be a fast paced walk, more of a warm up walk and then jump on for the 5 minute quick warm up before the weights. When I go in tonight I am going to walk there at a regular BeeRad pace :fly:, treadmill for 20 at 4 speed and then do some random leg workouts for about 30 minutes. Then go do another quick walk treadmill for as long as I can and then slow down walk home.

Saturday I will hit back up the weights so I am doing an every other day routine. Thanks for writing them all down, printing them out now and grabbing pictures of each set so I do them correctly!

are you good at getting up in the morning? one of my biggest obstacles is that I'm not a morning person and if I don't start the day right I lack motivation the rest of the day. the days I do get some exercise and a good breakfast end up being better days overall

No I am not a morning person but then again that depends on the night before. No matter what I do I can never fall asleep before 2am so I normally dont get that much sleep. Luckily for me though my current job is pretty much open for going into work. Dont get me wrong I show up to work everyday on time but if I want to sleep till noon I can without repercussion.

As a kid I always hated breakfast too, I love the types of food but I just cannot eat right when I wake up. Sometimes I just cannot hold it down, dunno why but I have always been like that.

Kidney stones?!

check mate. I will be out of the picture all weekend if my conclusion turns out correct, but I am usually right. Unless they come out broken up then it'll just be 1 night of screaming bloody murder. I wish I couldnt tell before hand, its a building pain and IMO that makes it so much worse. :(

You should get that looked at, I know someone who got a blockage from kidney stones. Bad situation that could have been prevented by just visiting the doctor.

Also, take care that it isn't a gal bladder problem. you can have some pretty nasty problems if that gets out of hand too.

Thanks for the concern, it is not a fun thing to deal with but it happens. My grandpa used to get them real bad, my dad gets them, I get them. I have cut them down quite a bit and normally dont have them anymore, if I do they are super small. Painful as all hell but I have some Rx shit I take that helps plus a little pot kills the nausea, which is probably just because of the pain. This is the reason I drink so much water and cranberry juice, I hate cranberry's but I drink the shit once a week. It helps

pomegranate juice works extremely well too if you want a change from cranberry's...but pom juice is pretty pricey :(

and before you ask, no, liquor drinks with grenadine does not count as pomegranate juice.

I could imagine. Luckily they didnt break into your actual home and not just the garage. Time to setup booby traps! Or just boobies

Did you guys play tennis yesterday?

Speaking of which, one of my friends is starting his own lawn care company. He has been in the biz since he was a kid but he just bought all of his own equipment. If anyone needs a cheap service let me know, he is trying to get his company out there now so he can swing some amazing deals. Pretty much all around Tampa/St Pete/Sarasota/Bradenton/PH/Pasco so if you need a lawn guy or just wanna save some money for the same amount of work hit me up.
