I bet it makes everything sticky. We had to replace the thermostat, it was incredibly sticky with nicotine*.

I remember in my last job I went to this guy's house to install an internet connection, and he had a standard beige computer case, except it wasn't beige anymore. More like a yellow. Soot was all inside the computer too. Fucking grosssssss. I think the worst is parents who smoke around their children (i.e. younger than 18 yrs of age) in the house.

When we saw the house, at least I, had no clue it had been smoked in. I'm guessing the sellers had stopped smoking a while back since the smell wasn't too bad. The stains are worse.

I do not agree with that either. As much as I despise kids, it used to get me pissed off when a friend would smoke weed/cigs around her infant. She was such an idiot.

fuck, that sucks. it's cool though, paint the walls and doors like you are doing, steam clean the carpet, and then buy that pet powder shit, put it all over your carpet and vacuum that bitch up - and if you're real paranoid rip open all the windows and purchase an air purifier. boom, it'll be like new

We hired a carpet cleaner/grout cleaner and took care of that before we moved in. Bath and body works was having a sale on their wallflowers (plug ins) and we stocked up on those... the smell isn't bad, it's the fucking stains. Have most of the house painted except the ceiling (which is last) and two bedrooms.

Why we are painting the ceilings....
http://upload.pzind.com/files/2/DSC03722%20%28Medium%29.JPG
Replacing the vent too. This house is going to be brand fucking new when we're done with it. Replacing the floors is on the list too.
Edit: It doesn't even look half as bad in the pic... stupid cheap camera. The ceilings are white with a tinge coming from the vent.
BEERAD STOP FUCKING SMOKING INDOORS YOU TWAT.
It's funny when smokers move their furnitue and see the difference in the paint behind things. It makes me laugh at them.

When the sellers took the frames off the walls there were squares of the original paint left. :barf:

The stains will ultimately work their way through paint, fyi. You may ultimately have to undergo some sort of godawful paint stripping ritual in order to cure the problem.
My mother-in-law, who smokes like a goddamned steamboat, had to run an ozone generator in her house for a couple of weeks prior to selling it. Apparently ozone, which is more or less what most folks call smog, is able to cancel out the smell or cigarette smoke. Who knew.

my dad smokes in the house sometimes...but his favorite seat is right by the windows in our living room, so he lets the air out that way.
my mom is the queen of scented candles and air fresheners though and our house doesn't smell bad.
most of the time he lounges in our backyard when he smokes.
Trust me .. go get you a damp sponge and wipe the walls. It doesn't all go out the window.

That's what I'm worried about. The colored paint is fine, it's the white on the doors and the frames that I think is seeping through. I told myself it's just my eyes seeing things. I put 2-3 coats on everything.

I've always had a strict 'no smoking' policy in my home, I'm making the house payments, I can damned well tell people not to spread their smoke all over MY house...but now with a very tiny baby around I've become almost fanatical about it. Anyone who walks into my house with cigarettes in their pocket had damned well better keep them there.

My inlaws smoke in their house, but only in their bedrooms with the door closed, its disgusting. They were at our house yesterday for a cookout. They went to light up in the backyard and I had told my husband to tell them they were not smoking in our yard. And his mom was like I'll smoke at the back of the yard and it was like no. His mom was annoyed but oh well. His sister said whenever they come over they find cigarette butts in the front yard afterwards. I am going to check my yard latter and if there are any I will be gathering them up and taking them to their front yard. (Yes I am in slightly vengeful mood since they left a tea container that leaked all over my fridge that I just scrubbed out the other day).

It is a nasty habit, and it would be nice if other people who smoke had some respect for others children and NOT smoke around them.
Selfish I tell ya!

I hated going to restaurants and getting sat near the smoking section, there were always people smoking there. I hated when you asked for nonsmoking seating and got sat right next to the smoking section because it was just as bad as sitting it the section. I am glad legislators ban smoking in Ohio. If someone wants to sit and pollute their lungs with smoke then fine but don't make me breathe in the crap.

Waffle House: 100%
Denny's: 100%
Broadway BBQ: 100% (I think I am the only person to ever eat at this place that did not smoke)
Purple Onion (little after hours spot that serves mediterranean food): 95%
Subway: 75% (sometimes they aren't busy)
Cracker Barrel: 50% (I usually ask to be seated as far away from the smoking section as possible but if they are busy .. you get put where they can stash you)
Rocky's Pizza: 60%
O'Charley's: 50%, unless I sat at the bar then it was prolly 75-80%
Ruby Tuesday's: 40%, unless I sat at the bar then it was more like 80%
I have friends who smoke .. so being in places that allow you to smoke at the table .. they did so. Now they have to get up and go outside. My meals taste so much better now, no more ashtray rememberance.

The "bars" (meaning, establishments that serve more alcohol than food) here still allow smoking if it is a privateclub (meaning you have to fill out a piece of paper and get a paper card with a # on it to get inside .. big woop).
So you still come home smelling like smoke.
I always put a towel on my pillow when I come home .. so my pillow doesn't stink. I also put my clothes out in the garage until the next time I wash clothes .. so my clothes hamper doesn't stink.

I've never entered a "scent free zone". You can't get cancer from sniffing perfume. And I highly doubt, unless it's ina hospital or some office where a bunch of peope are allergic to perfume/chemicals .. that they will implement that on a wide scale basis. They would bankrupt millions of perfume makers.
Smoking is bad for you, it's bad for other people, it makes wherever people smoke smell terrible, and it leaves a sticky, nasty mess everywhere (look at people who smoke alot .. it stains the tips of their fingers and their teeth. I personally don't want the inside of my lungs stained with that mess, or my kids lungs.)
It's hard to clean up and keep an establishment smelling and looking "clean" and smelling fresh when they allow smoking. I personally dont like eating anywhere smoking is allowed .. just for the simple fact it's dirty. I can't imagine what % of fire risks went down when they banned them either.
It's not a ban to opress people .. people who smoke just like to say that because they are pissed they can't light up wherever they want anymore.
Too many studies have been done that proves it's bad for you and everyone around you. They are tired of all the class action cancer law suits .. so they did what they needed to do to minimize a lot of them.

The point was that it can't take more than 30 seconds for you to walk into an establishment, see that people are allowed to smoke and choose to go somewhere else. If you still decide to sit down and eat then you have no one to blame but yourself.
You and your folks made the right decision. Getting an hour full of second hand smoke is due to your choices.

You cannot be serious. :( I have already put a million moons into this place painting it.
You might be just fine.
When you are with a group of people who smoke .. you're kinda the minority. You're also shit out of luck when you didn't drive. You're also shit out of luck when before the ban .. all restaurants were that way.
Now smokers are the minorty. We took that shit back!

Yet you're still choosing to hang out with said smokers. In other words, you have no one to blame but yourself.
If all restaurants were that way before the ban then stop going out. You choose to expose yourself to second hand smoke. No two ways about it.
I guess I could have just shut myself up in a box and never come out to. It was a lot more simple for the people polluting everything to just quit polluting the air so that everyone can enjoy the outside world.

i always find it funny when smokers get upset about this. Why should non smokers have to put up with the smell and nastyness of your addiction? They get up in arms yelling about how its their right to smoke. Sure, feel free, but dont subject others to it that dont want to be around it in a PUBLIC place. You tell us to go somewhere else, but it only takes one person to stink up the next place you go to. Where is our right to breathe fresh air in a public setting? Now its a law because the voters (aka the majority) decided they were sick of it and the only way to stop you people is to have a law in place. So fuck you and your constant bitching about how your rights are being opressed in this democratic nation of majority rule.

Define public place. Outside? How the fuck can people bitch about smokers outside?
Inside? Then vote by spending your dollars elsewhere. If enough people stopped spending money at a place, the establishment would rethink their policy. But yet again, people don't want to bother with any sort of personal responsibilty. They'd rather make the government do the work for them. Its fucking sad.

One thing I dont think is clear is how much this DID hurt some businesses. I know that PH Ale House lost most of their regulars because they couldnt smoke while having a beer after work. These are people who go there daily and drop 20/40 bucks on booze. If they had a choice they would have made it a smoking restaurant but thats the point, they had no choice. The "government" chose for them and made them lose many customers and most of their night time crowd. IMO they would still be open if they still had a booming night crowd like they used to.

they're outside, but within a private park. the park can set whatever rules it wants.
also, there's a fine line between complaining about the government banning smoking in private restuarants, and complaining about the restaurant owner banning smoking in his own restaurant. my problem is with the former, not the latter.
not that it wouldn't be a whole lot easier to quit if they banned smoking. that'd be great. but that doesn't make it right.
Why does it make it wrong? People who smoke clog up the air for the people who don't smoke. I don't see why it make smokers mad that they can't. Why shoulod you be able to in the first place. You can go to the store and buy a beer and drink it .. but you can't just walk around pouring it on people. You'd go to jail for harrassment. Smoking is no different.

It's wrong because smoking is a choice. A choice that the state of Ohio decided for everyone else, Alabama as well it seems. If I wanted to open a restaurant that allows smoking, I own it, I should be able to allow smoking. Until cigarettes and smoking are made illegal, a private enterprise should be allowed to manage it's own smoking rules.
You can .. make it a private establishment and serve more alcohol than food. Somehow I don't think you would have a problem there.
The thing is .. this is coming from the public's voice. No one randomly drew a suggestion out of a hat and so it was decided to ban smoking. The majority of the public complained enough about it over the last prolly 30 years .. and they finally won. That's how this system we have in place works. Majority rules.

Why is using the government sad? Its there by and for the people. The elected representatives may be a tab bit on the wealthy side, but they are every day joes too when that suite comes off. The government is there to enact and enforce laws the people and their representatives vote for.
I find it ridiculous that you think ever single non smoker that wants places smoke free should just not go to whatever establishment. Its not going to happen. Those people want to go out and have fun at a bar or a nice meal out just like the smokers. The fact that profits went up afterwards is indicative that they didn't go there when smoking was allowed.

I agree. If businesses want to allow smoking, there will always be smokers in there. Therefore, non-smokers who wish to not smell like smoke will not be able to enjoy the business at all.
That leaves non-smokers to hang out at a limited amount of places. Hmpf.
Why is using the government sad? Its there by and for the people. The elected representatives may be a tab bit on the wealthy side, but they are every day joes too when that suite comes off. The government is there to enact and enforce laws the people and their representatives vote for.
Exactly. The government was put in place to act like a parent to a bunch of little children. Sometimes parents have to do things that are good for their children, even when their children may not like it. It's why we have government in the first place.
People have bitched and complained about smoking ever since it started. Now with all the risks of cancer from 2nd hand smoke and the ever increasing amount of people with asthma and allergies to smoke .. the government is starting to listen to all it's people complaining, sueing, and getting sick .. and put a stop to it.
It's the best thing AL gov has done for us since it was begun IMO. They listened to their people, the majority of their people, and they did something about it. People called, emailed, and wrote their congressmen complaining about it .. and they finally stopped it.
The government is riding the fence tho. The non-smokers are happy now, but now the smokers are riled up. Before, it was the other way around.
Fact is .. smokers affect more than just themselves and that's not right. It's a smokers choice to smoke, the rest of us have no other choice but to breathe, and telling us to just stay at home if we don't wanna be around it is asinine.
Businesses allowed smoking because there used to be a lot more smokers. They allowed it to keep from losing business from telling the smokers they couldn't smoke. Now they don't have to worry about it. And they won't lose any business and they won't lose any money because everyone is the same. They will however save money on cleaning bills, furniture replacement costs, repainting costs, air purification bills, ventilation bills, increased consumer traffic, and their insurance rates will go down because of the lowered fire risk. It's a win-win for business owners across the board.

Exactly. The government was put in place to act like a parent to a bunch of little children. That people today actually hold this view makes flynavy a very sad boy. :( It's a win-win for business owners across the board.
:p except for that silly little concept called "rights" :nev:
Who gave you those rights? The government did. They alowed it, now they don't. toughs shit. It's their call on whether or not it should be allowed.
The government is just like a parent. Someone has to make the logical decisions. So they lumped a group of ELECTED people together to act in that role. You don't like how it functions .. put your voice out therei (like the non-smokers did) and be heard. Get things changed.
This is like saying a parent shouldn't have the right to tell their child they can't stay out til midnight when they are 16. They live under the parents rule until the move out. Don't like the rules set in place ... the people of this nation set the rules by voting the people who make the rules in office.
Sometimes we have rights that we shouldn't have had in the first place. I happen to think this was one of them. When it affects other people besides yourself adversly .. I don't think it's a "right" anymore it's a priviledge.

Not true. A smoker can go anywehre they please. Just when they feel they have a need for a cigarette, they need to be outside 25 feet from the exit.
A non smoker would have to be gone much longer than that to be in the same place if smoking was allowed.

Secondhand smoke can be harmful in many ways. In the United States alone, each year it is responsible for:
an estimated 35,000 deaths from heart disease in people who live with smokers but are not current smokers
about 3,400 lung cancer deaths in nonsmoking adults
other respiratory problems in nonsmokers, including coughing, phlegm, chest discomfort, and reduced lung function
150,000 to 300,000 lower respiratory tract infections (such as pneumonia and bronchitis) in children younger than 18 months of age, which result in 7,500 to 15,000 hospitalizations
increases in the number and severity of asthma attacks in about 200,000 to 1 million asthmatic children
increased incidence of middle ear infections in young children I can attest to this .. mine has had 4 sets of tubes because he's allergic and his nana wont' stopsmoking around him.
Pregnant women exposed to ETS are also at increased risk of having low birth weight babies.
An issue that continues to be an active focus of scientific research is whether secondhand smoke may increase the risk of breast cancer. Both mainstream and secondhand smoke contain about 20 chemicals that, in high concentrations, cause breast cancer in rodents. Chemicals in tobacco smoke reach breast tissue and are found in breast milk.

Dr Kurt Straif, who organised the IARC meeting, said the group examined 50 studies examining the link between passive smoking and cancer.
Speaking to BBC News Online, he added: "This is the first time that a global organisation has concluded that exposure to second hand smoke is linked to cancer."
One of the experts, Sir Richard Doll, said: "Environmental tobacco smoke that people experience at work or at home is definitely a cause of lung cancer.
"That has been discussed for a long time but this is the first time a group of independent scientists have reviewed all the evidence and said there is no question it is a cause of lung cancer."

Telling someone to go somewhere that doesn't allow smoking (in a city that still allows all places to allow it) is like telling someone to go to a restaurant that doesn't allow you to drink water.
All restaurants had a smoking section in Birmingham before the ban .. so that means if you didn't want your kids cooped up with it .. you could never take them anywhere. So, someone who is polluting the air should have the right to go where they please and make the non smokers (who are simply breathing air) suffer?
