View Full Version : Smart people should have their minority group representation

I spent the morning teaching someone in our company how to do a fairly (IMO) simple tech operation on their PC. This would not be upsetting, if it wasn't the 5th time I've shown this person how to do it in last 2 weeks. If someone had to show me how to do something 5 times I'd probably get fired, then I'd probably kill myself.
Smart people deserve their own minority group and need to recognized for the out of the ordinary trials they deal with. One may ask "Why is that?", and the answer is simple: we have it tougher than stupid people. Now I'll tell you why.
First off expectations on smart people are higher. We have to perform better, respond to problems and questions faster, and are expected to be able to pick things up and run with them the first time around. Stupid people don't.
Secondly, and somewhat more importantly, smart people have to interact and deal with stupid people. My situation today being a perfect example. Here's a basic transcript of how my phone conversation went with her prior to showing her once again how to perform the operation she was assigned to do by her bosses....
Woman: Hey, this thing that you setup don't work.
Me: Ok, what seems to be the trouble?
Woman: I don't know, it just don't work.
Me: Well is it giving you an error message or anything like that?
Woman: No, I just can't make it work, I need you to come do it for me again.
Me: Uh, well I'm working on some other things right now, could I possibly do it later this afternoon?
Woman: No, 'cause my boss is mad that I haven't done it yet, and I told him that IT hasn't gotten it working for me yet, so you'd better come now.
Me:....
So not only can this woman not do what she was told to do, and what I enabled her to do weeks ago, but she hung me out to dry in front of her bosses as an excuse. I shouldn't have to deal with this BS, no one should. Am I given the luxury of blaming my failings on others? No, I'm certainly not, and why? Because I'm smarter than average.
Smart people should have their own minority group, maybe even their own union.
Discuss.

No matter how you slice it that's ultimately what all IT jobs are. I'm going back to school and getting out, but that's not what this thread is about.

While what you're saying may be technically true there are plenty of jobs which remove you from the end-user (meatware) by several degrees. Not having to deal with their every, single, annoying, insignificant, self-inflicted issue can give you a much better perspective on things.

go over her head and tell her boss excatly what you did and that you have already explained how to use the program correctly and that she simply doesn't understand. sure it's mean but do you really want her dumb ass bringing you down with her?

Honestly I don't care at this point. We're moving in a few months and my record around the office is positive. I'd rather not a start a war at a place that is ultimately insignificant in my career overall.

I'D start making a record of every time you interact with this person and exactly how it goes down. then you'll have proof and records of what you are doing with her.
and please stop posting pages out of spange's diary. it makes me look bad.

Thankfully my job is so many rungs away from customers, 4 to be exact, that I don't have to deal with them. Good thing, too, as our software is almost unusable because of the difficulty level.

and the world is steadily being dumbed down these days to THEIR level instead of encouraging people to be smart.
Try working in a school hombre. The DUMB, not just youth, in that place would bring you to tears. I teach kids the same ish LITERALLY HUNDREDS OF TIMES, and they still don't get it.
I worked for the city years back, and realized I had to stop doing such a good job at stuff or they'd just continue to add to my workload. Without raising my pay. argh.
I like being smart, but yeah mang, LOT of dumbness in the world.
don't think we'll ever have a union, but not a bad idea.

their are plenty of people that go back to school because they are unhappy with their current careers. It seems like its the IT people that abandon the field the most, but i think its that most of us are just around those kind of people more. I would like to do something else, but i honestly dont know what else i would do.
'Why can't they get the picture? Why don't they understand?
We're not dealing with the planet of apes, we're talking about the
modern man.

I plan on going into one of the skilled trades if I ever get completely fed up with IT. Probably as an electrician or plumber or something.
edit:
Oh, and as far as the original post is concerned, everbody is someone else's complete idiot. That's just human nature.

Good point. In reality, every job is going to suck in some way. Stupid people have been weaved into the fabric of our very existence, you cannot escape them. Its best just to enjoy them with a good dose of laughter.

It all matters what your job actually calls for...
If it is your job to teach the idiots then next time you might want to write it down for her or have her write it down.
If your job is to fix the problem, well fix the problem... 5, 6, 22 times shouldnt matter

It's easy to say that, but when you have to keep explaining the same thing over and over it's all too easy to get frustrated. It becomes very easy to believe that when a user says they're having a problem they really just want you to do whatever the hell they're trying to do for them-- even though it's their job.

Explaining = Teaching
If they are such a complete moron that they cannot follow written instructions they have no need to be employed and something needs to be said. If they can say it is your fault for not teaching them then you didn't do a thorough enough job. Just make sure your ass is covered and call them a complete moron, obviously in more respectable terms.
Sadly .. there is no way to get around this kinda stuff. I've come to learn this the hard way.
I am in constant agony over this same type stuff, just in a different way. I'm not IT but I'm expected to know when someone has done something wrong and/or know when they haven't done it. And if they do it wrong I'm suposed to be able to back track through what they've done wrong and know how to immediantly fix it .. AND .. get all of my stuff done .. while making sure everything else that I don't realize isn't getting done .. gets done too.
It's enough to make a person snap and shoot some folks sometimes.
Having to explain the same things over and over to the same person is enough to make you just boil over. My 2nd shift employee does that to me. I've come to the conclusion that he just isn't listening to me. It's not that he can't understand it, he's just not trying. Which pisses me off even more; because I know why he does it. BEcause he knows if he keeps doing it wrong, I'll eventually just tell him to forget it and I'll do it. So I don't have to RE do it later. Aggravating tards.
Stupid people make me wanna rake their eyeballs out. Stupid people who throw me under the bus because they are stupid and can't figure stuff out, and know they can just put it off on me .. make me want to rake hot coals over their genitals after I rake their eyes out.
 I feel your pain.

I try to simpifly things for most of my users or type out a short little fold out and just email it too them. you would be suppired at the number of engineers that don't know how to copy and paste a file.
sounds like we need a career night on UF to decide what the most lucrative profatable and stress free careers are that involve zero user support.
