I was actually just listening to some Tragically Hip which is a Canadian band and I got to thinking...

What Band did you grow up next to? I tend to hear where bands are from and am quite surprised how close I was to them in location. For instance when I was younger we used to go watch Creed in basically garage shows. Usually they were in backyards but "garage band" is the more common term. When I lived in Canada the Barenaked Ladies were on a local kids morning TV show. I never got to meet them or anything but its still cool they lived so close. My brother did get to meet his favorite band Our Lady Peace who was also a local band for us growing up.

Any good stories of knowing a band before they were popular or growing up in the same area as a popular band did?

Filter recorded Short Bus about 10 mins away from me. Richard Patrick is from 2 suburbs away from me. Nine Inch Nails first show was in the same town. Trent grew up in Cleveland. Chimaira and Mushroomhead are from Cleveland as well.

I have loved Filter since as long as I can remember. We used to play street hockey and like clockwork someone would always get hurt when Hey Man came on. lol

Not many in here listen to punk but I used to be lucky when I was younger cause the doorman at the State Theater would always sneak me into the rooms. I cant even count the number of times I was chillin with Less than Jake, lol. Granted they have never been super huge they were always one of my favorite bands. Luckily they loved playing at State too.

IMO that is why so much good music came out of there, such a diverse selection. Although I didnt grow up there I know ppl who did and they always said you never really have a favorite type of music there. There is just so much that you just listen to it all, lol

We used to have Hellfest (biggest hXc music thingy in the country) here, the only local bands are Hardcore. Boring ass people. I've met Hatebreed 3-4 times just walking around and probably seen them perform 20+ times.

I still enjoy listening to Creed, in fact they were probably one of the best shows at livestock 10, 11, 9? shit they all ran together by now. They played to the crowd, not at us. Brought out his son, did a whole dedication to him with him on his knee. It was just an amazing all around set. Many people dislike them but until yesterday it was in my car cd player :fly:

They are Bush wannabies who started out as a Christian group and then jumped ship when the money came around. How can you possibly take up for Scott Stapp?

How did they jump ship? The band Creed was NEVER a full christian rock band and never said they were. The reason some of the songs had that theme is because Scott Stapp is a big Christian. Right now he is actually doing a project that is 100% christian rock with MXPX. And all I can do is :fly: at "Bush wannabies".

I've hung out with Ben and the other two in BFF, Darren and Robert. They were really cool. Put me on the guest list for a bunch of shows on their first tour.

One of the guys from Widespread lived on my street in Athens. I saw them somewhere over 20 times all over the country.

Blues Traveler played at my boarding school before their first cd came out because someone in my class was buddies them and got them to play for us.

Phish played on the quad at my college in NY with a free beer truck years before they broke into the bigtime. I've seen them over 20 times too.

Beerad, I saw the tragically hip play in like '88 or so...loooong time ago...in providence, RI

probably a couple others I'm forgetting

Everclear and uh...that's it. The Decemberists too, I suppose. Not too many bands are from Portland.

Actually...there are quite a few. They may not be super duper huge, but they do have a following and sell some records.
Another great thing about living in Portland is that you get to see a lot of bands from the West coast perform at some smaller venues which is always great for live shows.

Some other bands from the Portland area:
The Kingsmen
Quaterflash (first live "rock" show I ever saw! LOL)
The Dandy Warhols
Poison Idea
Sweaty Nipples
Elliott Smith
Pink Martini
Sleater-Kinney
Frank Back (well sort of. He lives there so you can catch him at random shows and such)
Hazel
The Wipers
Back in the beginnings of grunge you could catch the following bands at some of the greatest dive/punk bars in Portland:
Nirvana
Pearl Jam
Alice In Chains
Hole
Soundgarden
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Jane's Addiction

Man.... those were some good times and some great shows.
