Some jerk in a big honkn' SUV cuts you off in traffic. Are you the type that gets pissed, or do you just let it go? Me, I'm the type that gets pissed. I try to live life by the golden rule and be considerate and respectful of others. But few people seem to do the same anymore. Is it just me or does anyone else feel that way?
What causes people to respect eachother? Do you only respect people who are successful? Intelligent? People who are your peers? And what causes you to loose respect for someone?
Plez discuss.

I try very hard to let things go and turn the other cheek, I'm just not very good at it. I will not however let people push me around or bully me, ever.

Getting worked up about it solves nothing and affects no one but yourself. I try to live like that, but sometimes can't-- which is a real shame since I know I'll die early due to stress and nerves.

I get annoyed, but not angry like I used to.
I can't see around the friggin' things in my car, that's usually my biggest beef.
On the bike, I don't get cut off - for very long anyway ;)
I respect anyone 100% at first meeting, you can only lose points in various ways :D

If I get cut off and the person didnt actually need to cut me off because they are not turning at the next light I ride there ass about an inch away. If they almost get me into an accident or run me off the road I usually try to make them pull over so I can let out some road rage.

that's me. i usually get pissed by default unless i'm in a really good mood, when i tend to drive slower, and know that people are going to pass and cut in front. then, if they execute a turn or otherwise demonstrate they needed to get in the lane i forgive them.
of course there are exceptions. if you were two cars back, pulled into the left lane and floored it past me only to cut me off and hit the brakes to make your exit i might just follow you.

i've written off two vehicles in two-car accidents. Both were the other driver's fault. Both probably could also have been avoided if I were driving a little more defensively (i.e. slower), but at least I was in the right.

that's exactly what happened in one of mine. I was doing 80 in a 50 (km/hr) when a woman in a dodge aries pulled out from a stop sign right in front of me. One of my VP's came over and I thought I was going to get in trouble but he actually gave me a high five and said he would have done worse but that i did good! Being in Atlanta (traffic) it's impossible to NOT get road rage. But it usually rolls right off my back as soon as I exit the car.
What really gets to me is when people (esp friends and coworkers) who I expect to be considerate and respectful aren't. And I find the older I get the less patience I have for inconsiderate people.
I've had friends in the past that would constantly flake out on my plans with them. I'd get angry that they had such little value for my time and company. Or friends that would always plan things they wanted to do, with little consideration for what I enjoyed doing. I use to be very giving with myself. I enjoyed doing thoughtful things for others, but discovered that reciprocity seldom occurs. Once I see that someone is too wrapped up in themselves to be considerate of the people they should care about we don't stay friends for long. Has anyone else had friendships like this? Or are my expectations just set too high?

For some reason it's always the 'little' things that really piss me off. Someone could smack me in the face for no reason, and while I would go for the throat I would do so with less anger than if they had knocked a paper off my desk and kept walking.

I love doing little things for people, but you can't expect anything in return. You will set yourself up for disappointment. Some people aren't born as thoughtful as you. Plus it takes away the "niceness" if you expect the same in return. If they are mistreating you.. then yes dump them as a friend. If they aren't reciprocating what you do... can't hold it against them.

I admit I'm pretty guilty of frequent flaking. My problem isn't so much that I don't value my friends' company, but rather that I ALWAYS have things going on that involve my kid, my job, etc. It's very easy to say "Hey, I have to go take my kid shoe shopping" even if it isn't completely necessary to do it right then.
I'm also the king of not wanting to drive 25 miles one way to do something that doesn't involve the greatest oral sex I will ever receive. Everyone I know lives on the other side of town, and sometimes I just flat out don't feel like dealing with it. But of course I'll make up an excuse to not sound like a complete asshole, just a flake instead.

well back to the thread topic - you have routinely picked things oriented with female genitals for your choice of insults (at least in this thread); douches, and bloody cunts for instance - so you obviously associate these things with negativity, do you generally not respect that part of the female anatomy?

Blatantly obvious is okay. It's thinly veiling them that is the problem.

That is one of the hardest things I have tried to learn about a woman. It is one of the most difficult things to change their mind about and one of the few things that really annoys me.

I once had a classic moment when this lady was driving all crazy and cut off a bunch of cars including myself. I caught up to her and started fucking with her only because I wanted her to know that she was putting people in danger, she got lippy with me so without thinking twice, I looked down and saw a full glass of OJ. Her back window was down and saw an opportunity. :D Her back seat was soon covered in freshly squeezed sticky OJ :fly: She followed me to work and came on our property and I told the security guard that some crazy lady was in the parking lot and they made her leave. I had to let me boss know and word spread quickly of the incident. One of my VP's came over and I thought I was going to get in trouble but he actually gave me a high five and said he would have done worse but that i did good! Traffic in Florida sucks, people don't use blinkers like the people behind them are mind readers and know they are turning and the cell phones are out of hand. Hang up and drive already!

Is it lack of respect to get pissed at someone on the road?
I personally think the problem of respect is a generational thing. Too many of our parents screwed up and let us know about it. And young people always fuck up. It is what they do. So our generation is literally surrounded by fuck ups.
I also think that it doesn't help that too many of us are convinced that there is a simple solution to what we see is "the" problem.

Here is a suggestion for everyone seriously participating in this thread.
Once upon a time, I made a bunch of rules up that I thought would help keep the forum nice. Not only did most of you not like them, but unless I did the enforcing, they never got enforced. We reverted to no rules and that seems to make only a few people happy. So I'm going to make a thread over in the Brainstorming forum. I want you all to post in it what you think should be allowed and what should be against the rules. I'm not promising that all of it will be implemented, but I want to get an idea of rules that most of you are willing to live by.
I'll warn you here and I'll post it in the rules thread : if you crap, spam, attack, or in any other way use the rules thread for anything other than posting your suggestions on rules, 1 week ban. There won't be further warnings, you'll just be gone.

There has been an awful lot of bickering the last few days. Something is wrong. I'm not necessarily saying that new rules on content of threads are created. I'm asking what kind of accord can we come to alievate the bickering. I'm not promising that any of your suggestions will even be implemented. The peope who were bickering have all admitted that it was your standard male rivalry and all "in good fun". The outcome of one thread doesn't need to spark the need for change when, in my opinion, there isn't anything wrong at the core.
It is not my intention to be antagonistic here, I'm simply trying to put forth a different view on the matter.

Okay it looks like we all need to sit down as a family and decide who gets the poop platter.
What I mean is there are conflicts obviously about how this forum should be ran. There are only two people who run this forum and all the sudden everyone has taken that title for themselves. We have a wonderful balance of on topic and off topic threads which appeases everyone.
Obviously if on topic threads were a hit - the forum we used to have (if any one remembers it) Mass Debate, would have stayed around longer. Did anyone see it get deleted?
I didn't hear any complaints when it was gone.
Now to talk about thread etiquette. Personal attacks are a no-no we all know that. Who seriously talks like that in real life? THUGS thats who... scum who can't find anything better to say than to attack the person. We are a bunch of intelligent (for the most part haha) posters. This forum is an awesome place to hang out with friends while slacking off from work. I'm sure we can all agree [with theac] that it should be a bannable offense.
There was AN ISSUE in one or two of the threads, no feelings were hurt (that I know of) and it was squashed. This isn't a recurring problem.
Let's let it go and move on.
Unless we like this drama, let's duke it out UFC style. I'll play winner.

If this issue is due to people getting snippy at each other during heated debates, I can't help you there, it happens. People get very emotional when protecting their point of view.
If all this darma is due to people spamming in serious debate discussions, I have to once again ask, WTF happened to the Mass Debate forum? I must have missed whatever made it go bye bye, but without it, the serious discussions in the Useless Chatter forum are open season for spamming.
Edit: that and it was the one thing I was proud of cause I thought up the name. I'm going to go sit in my room and cry now. :emo:

I never visited the mass debate forum, so that's why I didn't miss it when it disappeared. However, I fail to see the reasoning behind getting rid of it if the people who did visit got what they needed out of it. I understand not wanting serious threads spammed, and I can see how a discussion thread (even if not serious) can be annoying when it's thrown off topic.
But that's what I like about this place.....out of nowhere you get slammed with the most random, stupid, funny, sometimes offensive comments. How can you not laugh at that?
The majority of the participating members that were here last time we had a forum uprising are still the majority now. We did not like the very serious way this place was being governed, and we are having fun with the slightly out of control insanity that has replaced it. A few isolated incidents do not call for a forum overhaul......and remember, you can please some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time, but you can't please ALL the people ALL the time.
I will now go back to my pseudo-silent prowling on the edges.....carry on and play nice :smooch:

But that's what I like about this place.....out of nowhere you get slammed with the most random, stupid, funny, sometimes offensive comments. How can you not laugh at that?
The majority of the participating members that were here last time we had a forum uprising are still the majority now. We did not like the very serious way this place was being governed, and we are having fun with the slightly out of control insanity that has replaced it. A few isolated incidents do not call for a forum overhaul......and remember, you can please some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time, but you can't please ALL the people ALL the time.

:emo:
No one posted in that forum for at least a month. The people getting emotional, unwarranted for the most part, seem to be the ones drawing attention to themselves. It almost makes me wonder if there is some underlying personal issue that needs addressed, not forum rules.
Didn't this thread get voted closed? Or do those rules not apply to certain threads?

We are all adults here *cough* and should be able to voice opinions without being ridiculed, banned, etc. etc. Shawn and I both post on another board where the rules are odvious - be courteous to each other and if you don't like a topic - don't open it! Define "be courteous". Does being courteous include spamming and derailing a thread that should be on topic (per the author or the rules)? Does being courteous include name calling and harassing? Perhaps in your world it is, but not in mine. If power tripping is a bigger problem to you then THAT's pretty silly. Perhaps these forums and the people on them mean so little to you that you just waste time here, but I prefer to use my time a little more constructively and at one time I actually valued the people here. And I don't see why everyone should have to conform to your silly wasteful standard. It's possible to find a happy medium rather than forcing the entire forum to be either or....however that would require some to be a little more respectful of others and the rules. Apparently that is too much to ask for.

The solution is to create a seperate forum called "On Topic Only" and let threads that are created there follow the associated rules. Useless Chatter should be left entirely alone however.

My purpose of suggesting that was to ultimately prove a point. If we created an OT forum 5 people would post in it on a regular basis, if that. It would dwindle to nothing, become a waste of space, and get removed.
The majority of the people here do not want more strict regulations on what they can post and where.

Holy shit. SInce when did this become my standard? I don't make the rules - I think they are ridiculous but since I enjoy many of the people who post here I try and stop by and involve myself.
why don;t you try showing a little etiquette?
Yes - this came from wikipedia: This came up when I typed courteous since you wanted a definition. In a nutshell it means different things to different people.
Etiquette, one aspect of decorum, is the code that governs the expectations of social behavior, the conventional norm. It is an unwritten code, but it may be codified in written form. Etiquette usually reflects formulas of conduct in which society or tradition have invested. An etiquette reflects the underlying ethical code itself. Like "culture", it is a word that has gradually grown plural, especially in a multi-ethnic society with many clashing expectations. Thus, it is now possible to refer to "an etiquette" or "a culture", realizing that these may not be universal.
I don't call people names - you are ridiculous Pandora - how about you calling Brad a free-loader and making fun of the way you THINK he acts. Hey pot... this is the kettle calling...
I think that if you don't end this silliness (telling April to shut her trap, calling Brad a wigger in not-so-many words) mocking KNYTE... there won't be anyone left to govern with your rules. Now lets all be adults - I think everyone agreed to move on. You are getting WAY to worked up over nothing. I'm not losing sleep over this - neither should you. It's unhealthy.:(
EDIT: I was being playful when I said this was a fun place to waste time - don't get your panties in a wad; I was talking about wasting time at work.

No, not really. Aside from that being obvious to me, just about everyone else here agrees. It just didnt generate traffic. Revising history isnt going to help because some of the same people you have such a problem with were the only few posters there.

"Cracking down" and "getting rid of problem members" doesnt count as that sort of behaviour? Right. You see even days after this forum started there were people complaining that it was going downhill because of the members. I have logs from 2004 to that effect.
