I have a tech question.
Why, for the love of all that is holy, do my network properties always get screwed up when I reboot?
Here's what's happening:
1. Turn the laptop on or reboot, and the wireless network connection no longer works.
2. I go into network properties, and my Wireless Networks tab has disappeared. I only have 'General' and 'Advanced'.
3. I go to Start, Run and type 'services.msc'.
4. I scroll down the list, right click on 'Wireless Zero Configuration' and click 'start'.
5. I go back into my wireless network properties, and the Wireless Networks tab is now there again.
6. I click on it, and click 'Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings'.
7. I Click 'okay', and the network works fine.
Every single time I turn on the laptop or reboot I have to go through this to use my wireless connection. Why won't it retain the damn settings?
wtf
I'm seriously about to choke a bitch, so any help would be swell.

Well your problem is that you are 'Using Windows to configure my wireless network settings'. You would do better having Helen Keller do it.

Actually Windows Wireless Networking that came with SP2 is far and away better than the software Belkin, Netgear, or Linksys provide.

It's actually NOT funny, because when I attempt to use the impossibly easy and user friendly Intel ProSet Wireless application it works even less. Either way your answer doesn't help me, and using Windows is the only way to get the damn thing to work in the first place.
Again, why doesn't it remember those settings? Why do I have to go through that every single time?

My Linksys software is far better at finding available networks compared to what comes up with the Windows Wireless but the Linksys software starts raping resources after about an hour.

Well the program wont work if it cant first identify the wireless connection. If I were at home I would be able to help out more :(

Don't use Windows to configure your network - uncheck that and use the software that came with your hardware. You should be able to save default setting that way

10 minutes on google and I have two solutions for you.
First, right click your desktop and say new>Text file.
In the text file copy and paste the quoted text below.
@echo off
c:\windows\system32\net.exe start wzcsvc
Save the file as WZC_Start.cmd and put it into your startup folder. This will automagically start the Windows Zero Configuration service on your machine every time you log in. PITA resolved.
Now, that's a bandaid on a gunshot wound. You really shouldn't rely on Windows to configure your wireless network settings, it can cause all sorts of headaches for you in the future. The second option is to manually configure your wireless card to automatically connect to your network. To do this you will need the SSID, WEP key(s) and about 15 minutes.
But, if you don't care who gets you connected so long as you can surf the internet, well, the batch file will work just as well.
Cheers.

Tried that. 3 hours later I said fuck it. Intel ProSet Wireless is not a nice piece of software. Of course, I'm also not a tech, so that could be my problem too.

So it sounds like your boss decided to set a bunch of services to MANUAL/DISABLED. I expect more weird problems to occur cause some idiot thought they could save 10mb of RAM.

I expect more weird problems to occur cause some idiot thought they could save 10mb of RAM.But that wouldn't completely disable the WZC service, would it? I would just expect that it would force him to always manually connect to the AP.

Because by letting Windows completely manage your wireless card it decides which drivers to load, which settings to use, etc. If the WZC service isn't started it won't load anything, your wireless NIC is so much dead weight in the system until configured. With no recognized wireless device there's no reason to add the Wireless Network Tabs.
Unfortunately it's one of the reasons Windows Automatic Networking sucks.
As for tinkering about with the other services... It's possible, but there were several hundred hits on google in regards to the WZC service having to be manually started every logon, so I doubt that's the case.

Technology sucks. I wish I knew more about it, and yet I'm glad I don't. It's such a pain in the ass to do something simple sometimes.

The FAA has actually restricted me to taping my sac between 3 and 4 a.m. Apparently the succession of screams are of such magnitude that they interfere with flight instrumentation around DFW.
