Guests of the Ayatolla
Lost Worlds: Manhattan Project
North Korea: Access to Evil

Ultimate Survival: Everest
American Eats (3) (insert joke here - great show about history of foods)
Grizzly Man (Amy - we've seen it three times yet she still wants Timothy Treadwell on the friggin DVR)
Entourage
Lucky Louie
Twin Peaks
Coldplay Live Leak
A short clip from Runaway Bride that I had to record due to its sheer ridiculousness - we watch it when we need to laugh

All in HD:
Lucky Louie
Serenity
Constantine
Kingdom of Heaven
Entourage
SD:
Think we watched all the stuff we had on there. Had been recording-
Last comic Standing
Hells Kitchen
Don't keep much on there. Usually we are prtty good about watching something that we recorded within the week, so we can delete it off the HDD. Mainly cause the HD movies take up so much space.

I spent a while trying to figure out how to access the raw data on the DVR's hard drive but no such luck. I did manage to capture via Firewire but so far the only app that'll grab it properly is CapDVHS; Premier will bluescreen. Anyways, I managed to capture a couple episodes of So You Think You Can Dance to edit and upload for a friend but the only app I could find to convert it properly was HDTVtoMPEG2 but that required splitting up the files or it would crash if I tried to make them any larger than 1GB. Problem with that is that splitting the data ruins the audio sync and no amount of fiddling with Premier could get it back. :( I spent a week trying to fix those files and never really got them perfect. :/
Eventually found a torrent of those episodes so it's all gravy. :o

dude, I did. it's where I found the drivers for the box - though we have a dct3142 instead of the 6142...couldn't find drivers for the former but the ones for the latter allowed me to capture without a problem since there's supposedly onlt a slight difference 'tween the two.
Another problem is that capturing in ts wouldn't work due to copy protection so the files had to be saved as .mpgs, contrary to what this site (http://replayguide.sourceforge.net/dct6412/) says. In the end the raw video played beautifully in VLC but Premier wouldn't recognize the video file nor would any other app I tried to use to strip the commercials. Would have been nice if HDTVtoMPEG2 was able to encode files larger than a gigabyte but it was the splitting of the files that ruined the audio sync. Even after trying to fix it I lost nearly a good minute of audio between all the commercial cuts.

1. This isn't trying to be anal, but you aren't re-encoding a thing when you move from a ts file to a mpeg file. A ts stream is just a packetized mpeg (in the US, that almost always means its MPEG2). I know that may sound petty, but getting little things like this wrong completely negates any chance of understanding other weirdness you have to go through to make this shit work. It does for me at least.
2. If you had a hard limit of 1GB, it sounds like you didn't properly set the MaxFileSize flag. 1 GB happens to be the default setting.
3. If you want to trim up ts files, try this http://jonkers.net.au/index_files/freewaresoftware.htm
4. So You Think You Can Dance? WTF is wrong with you?
Other than that, its hard to trace your sync problem without more info.

Good guess, but incorrect. Well, not entirely. The bedroom one sits on top of a dresser with nothing on it. The loft one sits on top of the TV. The living room one does sit in our entertainment center, which is very open. It has about a foot on either side of it, nothing above it, and the entertainment center does not have doors on it. We are not electronics murderers. These things are committing suicide.

1. I really have no idea what I'm doing. :p For some reason using CapDVHS if I capture with a .ts filename the data is corrupt. I figured it was due to the copy protection; I checked the box settings and it is enabled. However if I simply tell the app to capture with a .mpg filename everything's kosher. I have no idea why.
2. HDTVtoMPEG2, the app recommended by that link, allowed me to change the size of the clips but if I made them any more than 1024mb it would crash around 1048. I don't know what else I would have to change.
3.
4. Fuck you, it's a good show. In the past year I took a dance classes and got friendly with a couple of dancers and I'm currently hitting on another. :p It's a great conversation starter with fanatics of the show...besides, I really was capping those for a friend that went on vacation. :p

Meh, if they need to be replaced every two years and it's free, it's not really hurting us. I have no real complaints with our satellite service. It was better than the alternative and it is rare that it gets all wonky due to weather. If I lose some DVR'd programs in the transaction it's no real loss either. I watch too much TV anyway.

I'm just saying that box (the 921) is a nightmare. If that's what you have, demand a new one, stat. For a while, I know Dish was swapping 921's for 942's for free. I'm sure you could sweet talk them into doing it even now.

Analog is a bandwidth hog and much more difficult to maintain over digital. Digital cable also has the advantage that most people need a set to box to view it, giving the cable company additional revenue off leasing boxes. It also has this nasty habit of carrying encryption (like 5C) and making recording or viewing it in any way but what the cable companies allow next to impossible.

The only way to get around it is to build or buy an AVX1. www.169time.com
They're a little sketchy as to what it does, but it looks like it pretends to be a 5C compliant device, then strips the flag out as it passes it downstream.

Then there was no 5C encryption on that channel (it can be implemented per channel and with several different levels of permission). You were probably missing something else somewhere, but its hard to say what without samples and error logs. Don't feel bad, man. Like I said before, unless you really understand this stuff at a granular level, its very easy to screw up. I do it a lot and still have encodes I can't figure out.
