What is the purpose of the steam contained in certain tracts beneath Boston?

I would look up the company to find out but all I can remember is that the cover says '____-BOSTON STEAM'.

Every friggin search turns up nothing. Some chick said it was for the subway but I thought that shit was electric.

Fuck I hate not being able to find shit.

It's a combined heat/power system. Steam is traditionally used to heat buildings, and it's also being implemented by utility companies as a cheap supplemental electricity generating system. They've been using those systems in Europe for a long time, but they never really caught on in the U.S. until recently. I'm assuming that's what that would be, anyway. Or it could just be for heating.

In Duluth, MN they have steam to keep the roads from icing up in winter... Boston doesnt get all that cold though. Hmm...
