View Full Version : Do you know how to crimp a CAT5 cable?

So the "LAN Administrator III" here where I work is someone with some 10 or so years of network admin experience. This should mean he knows how to do practically anything that needs doing. Today he asked me to go pick up four crossover cables for him. No problem, except that the local shop only had 2, in bright colors.
Him: I really wish we had two more, or at least in more subtle colors.
Me: We have dozens of regular blue Cat5 cables, just recrimp a couple as crossover.
Him: Well, I'm not sure it's worth the effort.
Me: It takes like 5 minutes.
Him: I could also go buy some adapters.
Me: ...
So my suspicion is that he's never crimped a Cat5 cable before, which is rather like a mechanic not knowing how to change oil, or a hockey player not knowing how to skate, or a poker player trying to win a tournament with 7-3 offsuit, or...well, you get the point.
Anyway, it inspired the above poll out of curiosity. Enjoy!

I can, I just think it's a monumental waste of time, effort, and (usually) frustration.

Yep, I have the tool for it in my toolbox in the garage.
Altho, I have to look up the color order anytime I make one:p

I've been in IT for almost 10 years and hell if I'm crimping cables...let some A+ chump do that shite :p
I've done it before...successfully I might add...just don't care to...all you have to do is find a good cable and copy

He's getting senile in his old age. He's not quite sure which end to stick into the back of the computer.

That's the B standard and the one I know. I can't remember how the A standard goes.

Well technically...you could just make sure all the wires line up the same at both ends...
Sp`ange
03-28-2006, 08:56 PM
yeah. I just make sure I have both ends looking the same. fuck a bunch of colors. As far as cross-overs are concerned, 1 to 3 & 2 to 6

I agree with w_a_w I can do it but I have no urge to do it unless there is no other choice.

Too bad she had the utilities, Boardwalk and Park Place and had hotels already set up.

I have to further add that not only will I not do it but we have crates of premade cat5e that I can just go grab handfuls of varying length cable from...no one here makes cables

I don't work in IT, but I know how to do it because I helped my buddy in IT do it once
we had to do like 30 cables, my fingers were fucking killing me when it was finished
getting all those little ass wires in the correct order is a bitch
I had a friend *cough*lemon_fresh*cough* that didn't know the order of the colors mattered when crimping a cable.

I bet 'nev could make one from two RJ-11's cobbled together at each end and wires made from twist-ties.

As far as the colors and what goes where, I have no idea. But I could look it up.

He's like the Chuck Norris of RJ specifications. Sometimes he uses milled aluminum to make wires, just cause he fucking can.

Once he made an FC router from a pair of MagLite's, some chickenwire, and the dash assembly from a 1977 Ford F100
Remember that NAFLA LAN party back in 92? The one where the MAU broke and nev cobbled one together out of an apple pie and a shoehorn? Damn that was a good time.

Stuff like this is what men are for I think. It's sort of like taking out the garbage. Why should I if there is a man around to do it?

I used to have to make short crossover cables to tie to hubs together for an old client. It was a poor ass catholic college.
That was so much fun!
