I just redesigned the front page of my web site. It's gone through a lot of changes since I first got it over the summer and I've taught myself how to code all of it. I'm at the level now where I am using basic CSS and it seems to be going pretty well.

I have the gimp for images and that's how I made the welcome banner, the .gif of djduquet.com and the buttons.

After many experiments I've settled on this colour scheme, as it seems to work rather well.

www.djduquet.com

I think the best looking one is

www.djduquet.com/links.html

Let me know what you think.

Merci.

Also, if something doesn't look right could you post a screenshot, your resolution, and broser?

That would be great.

Your background should be black or make the transition to grey in a less eye-shocking manner. You could do this by making the top graphic in a black box that extends 100% across the screen. Also, you should not have "Welcome" above the title of the page. The page seems too basic. Put the links on the side or on the top. In the middle is just soooo 1990. Making all the pages match would be a priority too. A menubar on each page would be a good start. No one wants to click the back button every time they want to go to a different page.

Links is the only one capitalized.

edit: And why the button at the bottom?

I like these suggestions. Do you have a fav. page that has a menubar on one side of the page that you think looks good so I can look at the code? Because I haven't a bloody clue how to go about doing this myself.

I don't know ANY .php only xhtml and a little CSS.

Okay, so I should dump the welcome banner? Too cheesy? How can I make images have rounded corners with a shawdowy effect? Do I have to use some special skillz in the gimp? I don't even know where to start.

I've been using w3c so far but the above links will with out a doubt be the foundation for my next redesign. I'm just a little lost on the process that more pro looking sites use to create a product.

Thanks again for all the help.

Yeah, dump the welcome banner. If you want some welcome text, just put it in the main body of the first page. The rounded corners shoudl be fairly easy, look for some tutorials.

Design should NEVER start with code. Get an idea of how you want it to look first and figure out the code later.

I always start out my websites in photoshop. I get everything all set up the way I want, then break it apart into the easiest/most efficient way to code it and go from there.

You're using too many fonts, imo. I like the wispy smoke in the top banner.

The scheme is easy on the eyes as well.

I took a look at the links you posted. While they're not really my style, I think you did a pretty good job, especially if you're new to designing Web pages. And major kudos for learning how to do the coding, especially the CSS. That's how I learned to make pages back in the day, and I'm pretty thankful I did.

I agree with the comment about too many fonts. I'd narrow down your font list. Also, I can't figure out what the big gap is between the UXTheme button and the footer information.

If you want any sorts of ideas, here is a link to an incomplete version of my Web site. I'm in the process of adding information. http://www.mrhuston.net/new

Lastly, I think I agree with pretty much everything SpangeMonkee has said. So I'm not going to rehash their comments.

Thanks man. :) I love all the info and feed back that I've gotten from this thread. I'm now in the process with the gimp of making the images and the layout for the new site. I'll keep it at one, maybe 2 fonts, with all that has been suggested.

This has helped more than you can imagine. It's hard to learn all of this from just diving in but it's great to get some feed back. So thanks again.

djduquet thanks you. I was name raped. :(

here is my opinion, take it with a grain of salt.

I dont like links at the bottom.
I dont like hitting back to have to go back to the previous page.
Forget the welcome banner
I agree that the grey colour is too much.

I have a website too. If it gives you any ideas feel free to use them.
This website was originally setup as a place where I could host my images, and other files. I decided to learn some HTML, and put up a page. My webpage has gradually grown over the past year.

When I first got the link I spent a full day and a half playing with it. It's almost shameful how much fun something so simple can be. I was like a kid in the sandbox with a trickle of water coming out a hose.

I spliced some post-prod clips of Joe Pesci from "Casino" and Matthew McCounaughey from "Dazed and Confused", but the verb's a little thick so I have to go back in an adjust it.

Junkie did a great job with this remix. He typically layers very well.

I'll get a transfer to you as soon as I iron out those kinks.
